Princess Alexandra's Wedding: HM Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain

The lady in the lovely gold-colored poofy hat is none other than Queen Ena of Spain, another new historical hatter for the blog.  Ena was queen consort to Alfonso XIII of Spain; that makes her the grandmother of the current king, Juan Carlos.  She was also a granddaughter of Queen Victoria; and, as a Battenburg princess, she was related to the Mountbatten family as well.

I love this giant fluffy business of a hat -- kind of reminds me of this one, actually!

Princess Alexandra's Wedding: HRH Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark

Here's sixteen-year-old Anne-Marie of Denmark, strolling along beside her mother, Queen Ingrid, and a few paces behind her soon-to-be mother-in-law, Queen Friedrike of Greece.  Funny how much things can change in a short period of time, isn't it?  In less than eighteen months, this teenager would become not only the wife of Constantine II of Greece but also the country's queen!  And here, she looks so young in her hat with its little yellow bow:

Crazy!  (Cute hat, though.)

Tough to see the details of the hat that Queen Fred of Greece wore to this wedding; besides this black-and-white snapshot, we get only a little glimpse of it here:

She's the one to the left of Queen Ingrid (in the second row, wearing green) -- looks to me like we've got pale blue feathers here, perhaps?

Queen Ingrid wore her trademark feathers once more to this British royal wedding, and again, I'm struggling to decide whether I think that her feathers are the same ones she wore the next autumn to her daughter's wedding:

You can see just a glimpse of Ingrid's bluish-green feathers over QE2's shoulder here -- I'm still not sure.  Do you think we have a match?

Princess Alexandra's Wedding: HM The Queen of Sweden

Before there was Silvia in Sweden, there was Louise Mountbatten -- wife of King Gustaf VI Adolf, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, sister to Lord Mountbatten, and aunt to Prince Philip.  Queen Louise was Gustaf Adolf's second wife; his first wife, Princess Margaret of Connaught, died young and left behind five children (among whom were Prince Gustaf Adolf, father of Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, and Queen Ingrid of Denmark -- the woman to Louise's left in this photo).  Because both were descendants of Queen Victoria, Louise and Margaret were actually cousins -- so Louise was both cousin and stepmother to her new husband's children.  Ah, the ways of the royal world...

This photo gives a slightly better view of Louise's turban-style hat -- very Queen Mary, isn't it?  Love the soft blue color ... very regal!

Pretty typical Queen Mum hattery for her niece's wedding -- she certainly was a lady who found a style and stuck with it, wasn't she?

If Lady Louise needs some tips on bridesmaid-ing before April 29, her Auntie Anne is the person she should talk to.  Anne was practically a professional royal bridesmaid during the '60s -- here she is with Alexandra on the big day.  I love the bridesmaid dress ... but I think the headpiece would be cuter if it were just a headband rather than an ace bandage wrapped around a beehive.  Thoughts?

Princess Alexandra's Wedding: HRH The Duchess of Gloucester and HRH Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone

We've got duelling royal Alices in this hattery photo!  On the left, in the flowery blue '60s creation, is Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria (actually, the last of her grandchildren to die, for that matter).  She was the daughter of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany; she was also Queen Mary's sister-in-law through her marriage to Prince Alexander of Teck (later the Earl of Athlone).  The hat's not bad for the era/wearer; love the '60s fur.

The other Alice here is on the right: Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (mother of the current duke -- that's her husband looking a little bewildered in the middle).  I love, love, love her hat here -- I wish this sort of 1960s floral style would come back into vogue.  It's so flattering, and the blush color is perfect.

Bravo, Alices! :)

I have a feeling that maybe Liz looks less-than-enthused here because she realizes that she accidentally wore a '60s floral swim cap to the Abbey...

Okay, hatters, are you sitting down?  Are you?  Good -- because I wouldn't want you to see this until you were properly prepared:

I mean, from the front, Princess Margaret's chapeau for her cousin's wedding doesn't seem that out of the ordinary for a big '60s society event.

But then...

Yep, that's exactly what you think it is.  And, fair enough -- when I find my headwear's a little boring, I think, "You know what would make this a little jazzier?  A Donald Trump-style combover!"
