Pre-Wedding Theatre Gala: HRH The Duchess of Brabant
Here's the first time we've seen Crown Princess Mathilde's tiara on the blog -- it's the Diamond Laurel Wreath Tiara. The tiara Mathilde wore on her wedding day was loaned to her for the day by Queen Paola, but this one is her own. It was given to her as a wedding gift by a group of Belgian aristocrats.
This tiara is the only one that Mathilde has access to -- something unusual for a crown princess -- but the Belgian royals in general are fairly tiara poor. Even Queen Paola only has two major tiara pieces, so there aren't many to lend or give to daughters-in-law.
I do love this laurel wreath design on Mathilde, though. If she's only going to have one tiara, at least it's a beautiful one. Something about it really suits her, IMO.

Lovely tiara - also the tiara can be worn as a necklace and she has only done this at a few events one notably being the pre-wedding dinner of Willem and Maxima in Feb 2002
I do like a wreath tiara, and what a nice group of aristocrats they must have been to give her such a pretty present. The dress would have been nice if they'd got it finished, but I guess just wrapping spare material round the top is a save of sorts.
The tiara is lovely, and I don't mind she's not tiara-heavy, something about her doesn't scream "I need a ton of tiara's."
But the dress.....my god.
The dress was made by Italian designer Giorgio Armani!
The dress might be Armani, but I wish they had toned some of it down a bit.
That tiara is beautiful. Suits her down to the ground.
Tiara is lovely, but the dress... blimey. She looks like she has a sleeping bag on. Not good. And the bit round the top - it's a barrage balloon.
Mathilde can do so much better.
