U.S. Military Academy: HRH Princess Máxima

Four hundred years ago, the Dutch hired Henry Hudson to sail down a river in New York in his ship, the Half Moon, and to mark the occasion, Princess Máxima apparently decided to sport ... a feathery half moon of her own? (No, not like that. Stop it. This is a family blog.)
I must say, I find these "bottom half of the back of the head" hats just as perplexing as the "stuck it to my forehead and it stayed" variety. Thoughts?
I like the fact that she wore orange.
Um, what would be the point of this? I just don't exactly understand.
Point of what?
Really ugly. Worst I've seen on Maxima.
Point of the headpiece, I assume? If so, I'm not sure. Certainly not to keep the sun out of her eyes.
Is this half a hat, or is it just on the wrong bit of her head? Peculiar, and somewhat pointless really...
I actually like it. It's better than those strange fascinators, at least.
I suppose it goes back to one of the original purposes of hats - to keep your hair either covered or in place. So some might have been worn at the back - bonnets? Now its just to catch the eye - which this does..
For many years I wore an old fashioned nurses cap in exactly that same position - it did nothing for my hair but was just traditional. Stupid if you think about it but every day I pinned that damn cap on.
