Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony: HM The Queen of Sweden (10 Dec 2009)

Queen Silvia gives us a Tiara Alert at the Nobel ceremony as well, and yet photographers don't give us any close-ups of Her Majesty.  Go figure...

This impressive tiara is Queen Sophie's Diamond Tiara, also called the Nine-Prong Diamond Tiara.  It was made for the wife of the Swedish King Oscar II, who reigned from 1872 until 1907.  Queen Sophie, who was born Sophia of Nassau, was a very influential figure -- some have even called her the "Swedish Queen Victoria."

    It almost looks like a pecking order - princess gets four buttons; crown princess gets six buttons; queen gets super tall, super amazing tiara! Oh to be Queen.

    I don't really mind the button tiaras (but they are definitely more of a European tradition), but I cannot stand that thing Queen Silvia's donned. I think she needs to wear her hair up if she insists on wearing this piece.

    I'm rather Disappointed by queen Sylvia this year : recycled outfit, so so hairdo and gloomy face. She can do so much better (well at least for the dress and the hairdo ;) )

    Sir Tom, surely not. The nine pronger is a masterpiece! Silvia always wears it so well even if she is having one of her dowdier frock days.

    I read that QS had a hairdo malfunction (on the right as we look at HM, her hair has come slightly undone and is falling on her left shoulder) which might account for her less than pleased expression. Her hair was repaired before the dinner.

    I just posted another photo sent in of Silvia at the dinner, and I do think you can see a clear difference in the way her hair is arranged. Good catch, Matthew!

    Jewel know-alls: what is the brooch that Silvia is wearing? The one with a photo in it?

    I'm not a jewel expert, Eliza, but I think you're talking about the Swedish royal family order. The cameo depicts King Carl Gustaf, and Victoria, Madeleine, and Carl Philip are wearing the order as well.
