Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony: HRH The Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland

Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony: HRH The Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland (10 Dec 2009)

It's December 10th, and we all know what that means -- major Tiara Alerts from the ladies of the Swedish royal family!  The Swedish royals have one of the fanciest collections of tiaras in Europe, so it's always fun to see which ones they'll wear.

Here's Princess Madeleine at the ceremony for this year's Nobel Prize Awards in Stockholm wearing her royal bling of choice for the evening, the Diamond Four Button Tiara.  The diamond "buttons" on this tiara and its sister piece, the Diamond Six Button Tiara, were apparently attached to the crown used at the coronation of King Carl XIV Johan in 1818, but they were removed at some later point and made into these tiaras, which are most frequently worn today by the Swedish princesses.  (I'll admit -- they're not my favorite.  But I think it's just because I don't really like button tiaras...)

ETA: Believe it or not, hatters, Princess Madeleine actually pulled off wearing two tiaras to the awards ceremony, as you can see in this photo from the dinner afterward:

The necklace that Madeleine is wearing is actually the Modern Fringe Tiara, also called Queen Silvia's Diamond Fringe Tiara!  If only she'd decided to wear that one on her head, I would have been even happier...

I'm interested that the buttons were removed from another piece, because these tiaras do have a rather 'unfinished' look to them. They would make fabulous hairpins...(*adds to fantasy jewel collection*)

Yeah, I agree; the button tiara looks...I don't know, sort of cheap. (Granted, that "cheap" tiara is worth more than I own, and likely more than I will ever own.) I like Maggie's idea--they'd make awesome hairpins.

    She's gorgeous !!!

These Button Tiaras are not my favorite--many jewel/hat posters feel the same--but Pcss Madeline wears this one as well as it can be worn. Her hair obscures the framework and all one sees is the diamond buttons. And the fact that she's a stunner doesn't hurt.

I agree she makes it look as good as it could. The hair is great. They got the best genes the Swedes didn't they!

you have more information on the 4 button tiara but also the 6 button tiara here

I get everyone's points but I don't know...I like this tiara, for some reason.

  8. Marg says on :

The "buttons" get lost in her brassy coloured hair! Ugh, not a good look for her and it does not showcase the simple beauty of the tiara!

I'm having technical difficulties accessing the blog--no posts newer than the Turkish state dinner are showing up for me. I got to this one by clicking on the "recent comments" sidebar. I've tried 2 different browsers. Anyone else having problems? Hard to believe there have been no new posts since 11/22.

This is an exceptionally busy time of year for me, ktreas. I'll be adding new posts when I get the chance.

Oh, no problem...didn't mean to seem pushy! Just feared I was missing out on lots of great hats. I'll keep checking back. :)

A MUST SEE SHOW ON TIARAS AND ROYAL JEWELRY! I don't know if this has been mentioned anywhere but there is a fantastic new TV show from Danish television on royal jewelry. Although the narrative is in Danish we get to hear Queen Daisy, Queen Silvia, CP Mary, and various other royals telling the stories of these pieces in English! A real treat. Great unseen videos of events including alot of historical footage following the pieces through history. It first aired on Dec. 11 and part two is the 18th. Great close up shots in HD, nice personal stories and tons of sparkle. It's an hour long episode, commercial-free. If you like this stuff you have to see it. If you know your Scandanavian royal history, it will help. Enjoy!

@crazycap - thanks so much for that link. It was a terrific watch, and so nice to hear the women speak about the jewellery, esp. Daisy. So knowledgeable and interesting but always a twinkle in her eye and a smile not very far away. What a hoot she must be!

It was surprsing (to me) that the diamond twist she often wears in her hair has some age to it, as it looks quite modern. (Properly known as the Floral Aigrette Tiara.)

Can't wait for part 2. Thanks, Sandra. That part of the "daisy" was interesting wasn't it? There used to be a set of videos on youtube that was about her family as they married through the royal families of Europe. Unfortunately, it was deleted. It was in English as well and she was superb in her history and the associated home movies shown. CP Fredrick and Prince Joachim were also interviewed in English. A great show if you can find it somewhere.
