Vancouver Olympics: HM The Queen of Sweden

Now, now, Carl Gustaf.  I know Silvia's wearing the same hat she wore a mere four days ago, and I know it's falling down over her face.  But still ... it's not nice to point!  (And, besides, you're at the Olympics, and she's obviously freezing, so give her a pass!) :)

Swiss Re "Gherkin" Building: HM The Queen

You loyal hatters were all over this one -- Queen Elizabeth headed out to tour some London landmarks today, including the Tower Bridge, Aldgate Tube Station, and this spot, the Swiss Re Building, which the locals called the "Gherkin" when I lived in Merrie Olde England.

Liz chose a repeat hat for this little jaunt to the City -- she wore this little number, most notably, on Christmas Day in 2008.  Still not a fan of the feathery explosion up top...

Thanks to lovely readers Lise, Eliza, and Valerie for sending me info on this event!

Vancouver Olympics: HRH The Hereditary Princess of Orange and HRH Princess Ariane

The Dutch royals are back at the speed-skating oval today for the 10,000m men's race, and Princess Catharina-Amalia has shown true commitment to hattery, busting out yet another bright orange knit cap for the occasion!

And littlest sister Princess Ariane got in the hattery game at the event as well -- but she appears to be using her orange hat as a cloaking device, hiding her tiny royal visage from the masses.  Or maybe she's just too nervous to watch!  Or embarrassed that her dad wore a bright orange velvety blazer to the event!  (I can't wait to see these three adorable princesses in that hilarious "my parents are ridiculous" phase.  It will be a joy to behold.)

(Also: I love the "hold the phone, countrymen!" gesture that Amalia is doing here -- now that's a future head of state, right there!)

Finally, dear hatters, we've got another "spot the hidden royal" photo happening here, and this time it's neither a member of the Dutch royal family nor King Constantine.  Can anyone ferret out the secret royal here? :)

Gausdal, Norway: HM The Queen of Denmark

Ladies and gentlemen: I give you Queen Margrethe, who will be 70 years old this year, on the slopes of Norway.  Fanastic!

Our resident Danish royal family fangirl, Kirsten, sent in this particular photo.  I'll defer to her on this hattery verdict: "I’m beyond words.  She’s, well, old; she’s skiing; she’s got perfect nails and, apparently, the rock of Gibraltar on her finger.  Oh!  And an appropriate hat.  My Danish Bedstamore was awesome, but not this awesome!"

I could not agree more, especially about the nails and the bling.  Margrethe must have a manicurist and a gem appraiser on standby at all times...

(Oh, and for all of the rest of you who, like me, don't have major Danish roots, bedstamore = granny.  Yes, I had to look that one up.) :)

Church of Our Lady of Laeken: HRH Princess Claire

And the big hattery winner for today ... Princess Claire!

I can hardly stand it, this is so chic!  I love how it takes the traditional beret concept and puts a new twist on it, with a jaunty angle and size, and interesting pleating and shaping through the top of the hat.  It also contrasts really well with the fur collar of her coat.  And it's even great from the back!

It's perched just perfectly on her ponytail.  Well done, Claire! :)

Church of Our Lady of Laeken: HRH Princess Louise

The last time we saw Princess Louise, she proved that she's definitely a hatter-in-training.  This time, her parents have given her one of the best kinds of hattery training wheels -- a lovely little headband with a pretty bow.  Perfect for a little girl, and done in a neutral color so that it doesn't scream "dress up."  A+!

Church of Our Lady of Laeken: HRH The Duchess of Brabant

At first, I was ready to fawn all over the hat that Crown Princess Mathilde wore to today's memorial mass.  I love the color, the shape, the angle, all of it.  But then I saw it from a different point of view:

... and I don't love the way that the hat doesn't have a crown.  If this one covered Mathilde's entire head, I think I'd be on board for sure.

Church of Our Lady of Laeken: HI&RH Princess Astrid, Archduchess of Austria-Este

Oh, Princess Astrid.  Hattery is always so hit and miss with you -- either it's a snappy military chapeau, or it's a slightly insane semi-formal topper.  This, unfortunately, seems to fall into the latter category.

I don't totally hate the idea of this headpiece, but there's just something so Sonja Henie about it.  The white fur makes it look like an old-fashioned figure skating costume for a little girl rather than a hat for a memorial service for a grown-up royal princess.

Church of Our Lady of Laeken: HRH Princess Maria-Esméralda

Look out, it's a brand-new princess for the blog!  This is Princess Maria-Esméralda, the youngest child of the late King Leopold III of Belgium and his second wife, Princess Lilian -- making her the half-sister of the current king and the full sister of Prince Alexandre, one of the members of the family who is being remembered at today's memorial mass.

Maria-Esméralda doesn't undertake royal duties; she is a journalist, writing under the name Esméralda de Réthy, who lives in London with her husband and her children.  It's great to see her out with the family for an event like this one, though.  I do think she might have gone a little too traditional with her hat choice, though; rather than reading "appropriate for a royal memorial mass," it goes a little over the edge into "costume" and makes her look a tad matronly.

Church of Our Lady of Laeken: HRH Princess Léa

Another dark brown hat for the memorial service, which I like, but this one seems a bit too big, like it might sink down over Princess Léa's face.  Regardless, I like the shape and the overall look for Léa, especially with the dramatic sweeping neckline of her jacket.

She's an elegant woman, and she's looked remarkably regal and calm since the unexpected death of her husband, Prince Alexandre, at the end of last year.  One size smaller on the hat, and I think we'd be in business!
