This birthday gala is really an embarrassment of riches for the blog: here's another brand-new royal! This is Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, wife of the current Grand Duke, Henri.
Born in Cuba as Maria Teresa Mestre y Batista-Falla, she had an international childhood, living in America, Switzerland, and Spain. She and Henri met while they were studying political science at the University of Geneva -- you've gotta love a brainy grand ducal couple! ![]()
Here Maria Teresa is wearing the Chaumet Emerald Tiara. Bear with me, hatters, because I have two theories on where this tiara may have come from:
a) That it's a royal heirloom, which came into the Luxembourgish royal family back when Henri's grandmother, Grand Duchess Charlotte, married Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma in 1919, or...
b) Somewhere, Wonder Woman is searching frantically for her Golden Tiara.
Personally, I think either story is equally likely. ![]()

I love this art-deco style of tiara, but she's made a right hash of putting it on. It's not an Alice-band your Highness, it should be perched just so!! I wonder if it might be too small?? And another case of up-do lacking I think. Without the up do there's nowhere to anchor the rocks, and it all goes pear-shaped.
Maggie, you're exactly right. These deco tiaras DEFINITELY require up-do's. Maria is wearing it too low on her head, which is such a shame because it could be so beautiful with the right positioning. It has so much potential, but the presentation is somewhat lacking, almost to the point of looking shoved on at the last minute.
What Maggie said.
Nah, Queen Sonja is the owner of the ultimate in Wonder Woman headgear: http://www.angelfire.com/la3/lone_mor/kongelige_s_topaz.html
That said, Maggie is spot on about the updo. An updo with loads of hair behind the tiara so the point isn't sticking up too harshly, I would think. Probably not possible for Maria Theresa with her medium-length hair (without the help of a hairpiece, at least!).
@Shannon: LOL -- that tiara of Sonja's always reminds me of something out of a show like Star Trek!
It's blindingly obvious that an up do was needed here isn't it - to everyone expect MT and her hairdresser! It is a lovely tiara, and unusual, but on MT, just a bit lost... This one does need someone younger, and might I say a little more sylph like... I don't know about Wonderwoman, I keep thinking more Blunderwoman from the 80's... http://www.tenthplanetevents.co.uk/ekmps/shops/happyhenhomes/images/bella-emberg-as-blunderwoman-signed-10-x-8-photograph-106-p.jpg
Yes, the Grand Ducal Family does possess Wonder Woman's tiara. Pictured here on Grand Duchess Charlotte with her magnificent Chaumet necklace.
I like it and the way she is wearing it. It does look youthful, but guess what, she's not old. The dress, however, is unfortunate. Sleeves needed.
Sorry, but my nick name for this Grand Duchess is "Miss Piggy"!
