Hattery Flashback: The Wedding of HRH The Prince of Orange (2002)

HRH The Prince of Orange and Miss Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti
February 2, 2002

Here's our third crown princely wedding in the run up to Crown Princess Victoria's June nuptials -- less than a month now!  The crown prince of The Netherlands, Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, wed Argentine investment banker Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti in 2002.

The wedding was not without controversy; Máxima's father, Jorge Zorreguieta Stefanini, was a minister in the administration of Argentine dictator Jorge Videla.  Videla's government carried out what was called a "Dirty War," killing tens of thousands of Argentine citizens, and Zorreguieta's involvement was suspect.  However, the Dutch States-General granted permission for the couple to marry -- but neither of Máxima's parents attended the wedding.

Since their marriage, Máxima's relaxed and friendly personality has become quite popular with the Dutch people.  She and Willem-Alexander have three daughters: Catharina-Amalia, Hereditary Princess of Orange (who will likely one day be queen), Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane.

Was she the one who wore the dress with the bows on the bottom (by Viktor & Rolf, I think)?

Love the tiara, and because of the way she is wearing the veil, it doesn't look like it is just perched on the top of her head.

I think Mabel had the bow dress, didn't she? Dutch royal experts, help me out. :)

Ohhh.. it was definitely Mabel with the bows! You couldn't forget them in a hurry could you...

It is interesting that the brides who everyone worried about being unsuitable (Mette-Marit, Maxima, Mary) have been terrific successes, whereas Charles' 'suitable' bride turned out to be a catastrophe.

I have to say, overall this wedding really put the madhat into madhattery!

Only 25 days to go! Squeee!!

  5. Eveline says on :

The haute couture wedding dress of princess Maxima was designed and made by Valentino. The 'bow dress' was the wedding dress of Mabel, the former gangster love. This bow dress was made by Victor&Rolf.

    The best dressed:
Princess Caroline of Monaco (for very elegant outfit and hat).
Princess Irene (for very elegant outfit and hat).
Princess Marilene (for elegant outfit and best hat).

Apparently you are not aware that the king of Greece was deposed in 1973. This means that there is no such thing as a HM QUeen Marie or HRH Crown PRincess Pavlos. Crown Princess? There isn't even a KING. How in the world can this upstart be a crown princess? The Greeks are some smart Europeans to get rid of their ne'er do wells!

  8. Ella says on :

@Susan -- first off, welcome to the blog.

I'm fully aware that King Constantine was deposed in 1973, and that he and his family no longer sit on the Greek throne (no one does -- the entire monarchy was abolished). I refer to the family by the titles that many European monarchies use for the former Greek royal family.

In fact, the way they're titled on the blog is a nod to the fact that they're not in charge any more. Anne-Marie is called HM Queen Anne-Marie, not HM The Queen of the Hellenes. Marie-Chantal is called HRH Crown Princess Pavlos, not HRH The Crown Princess of the Hellenes. That's in line with the way that the other royal families refer to them. I do put a bit of thought into these things. ;)

If you're railing against monarchies, I can't imagine you'll spend too much time on a royal blog like this one, but ... enjoy your time here?

    Well said, Ella!
