Look past HM Cake in the foreground here, and let's focus on Queen Sofia, shall we? Sof's wearing a new tiara to the blog -- it's the Mellerio Shell Tiara, one of the most interesting pieces in the entire Spanish collection. The tiara was made, as you may have expected, by French jeweler Mellerio in the mid-19th century. It's a lovely tiara, with pear-shaped pearls, designed to look like a cresting wave. See it? It's actually pretty cool!
After going on display at the 1867 Paris Exhibition, the tiara was a wedding present from Queen Isabella II to her daughter, another Isabella, on her marriage. Somehow, the tiara made its way through the various branches of the Spanish royal family and was given to Sofia by her new father-in-law, the Count of Barcelona, on her wedding day in 1962. Not a bad welcome to the family!
Sofia came to this wedding solo -- Juan Carlos doesn't come to weddings as a general rule -- but she found plenty of suitable escorts among the company...

Prince Henrik of Denmark, Queen Sofia, and President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson of Iceland

I have a weakness for Pearl Tiara's as a rule, and this one is fab.
That is a gorgeous tiara, and her dress is lovely. I wondered where the king was, but she got to sit next to Carl Philip in the cathedral so I expect she didn't mind too much!
Ella, you didn't sneak Carl Philip into a photo of the church!!
Stunning tiara, um, interesting dress? I don't understand the various branches of the Spanish Royalty, so I'm happy you did the modified version!
I was so expecting CP to pop up in this post! This is the first time I've seen this tiara in movement and I had no idea the pearls moved. I love the uniqueness of it, the crashing wave is really beautiful and looks perfect on the Queen.
"Did I hear my name, ladies?"
Ella-Daniel's saying "I'm hoping, since its my wedding, Mad Hattery talks about me instead of you. But its not going to happen."
It's a lovely gem this, and doesn't Sof looks elegant. Very nice look for the lady of a 'certain age'!
i love sofia's dress! and her tiara, necklace and earrings!
Exquisite, head to toe. Genuinely Queenly.
