At first, I thought that Queen Bea was strutting her stuff at her goddaughter's wedding in a setting of the Ruby Peacock Parure Tiara, in a slightly different way to wear the tiara than she chose for Margrethe's big birthday in April, but lovely reader Jo pointed out that it's actually the Mellerio Ruby Tiara, a new one for us on the blog. Thanks, Jo! ![]()
I really like this one for Cake -- she needs substance in a tiara, and this one's got it! The Mellerio, according to the great site Jo linked in the comments, was made by the French jeweler for Queen Emma in 1889, and was originally supposed to be set with sapphires. I'd love to see this one with blue stones again! (If anyone can make that happen, it's the innovative Dutch royals -- they're so clever with their tiara collection!)
Speaking of substantial: click below for a full-length photo of the dress:

Queen Margrethe and Queen Beatrix

The tiara is fabulous, but I'm not going to talk about the dress, it's too painful...
HM Cake definitely looked like a cake. Not a good thing at all.
Gorgeous tiara, though.
But what the hell was she thinking with the dress??????? I understand she's a little on the short and pudgy end of the spectrum, but Why not make the dress less like a pillow slip, and more like, well a dress?
I think the whole ensemble is great! I absolutely love Beatrix!
Actually, I think this dress is perfect for her build, and is all one color, unlike the monstrosity she wore for Marge's birthday. The style is something you might see at any formal wedding on Long Island or at the Jersey Shore, but its not unattractive for that. I kind if like it, very festive. Tiara goes well with it.
Ella, this is actually the Mellerio ruby tiara, not the Peacock tiara. See the link to this excellent site. http://www.royaldutchjewels.nl/Mellerio_Ruby_Parure.htm Your site is fantastic - thank you for all your hard work blogging about this beautiful wedding
Ooh, Jo, you're right, it is the Mellerio! Will fix that one ASAP.
And welcome to the blog!
I sometimes think Cake's fashion sense got caught in a 70s time warp.
Love the tiara though.
I love Cake's fashion sense(omg, when did we start calling HM cake?, love it!). I love this Tiara too though I think Maxima wears it to full effect.
I heard someone said that tiaras get damaged by hairspray, wich raises allot of questions...
Whilst I love the tiara, I hate the frock... it's very Dorothy from the Golden Girls!
I was browsing the archives and came across a photo of Cake, and I have to wonder...did she put her top on back to front..? I would value your thoughts.
Oh maggie... if she did put the dress on backwards, I think it was all for the best; We really don't want to see that much clevage on HM Queen Cake, do we?
HM Cake needs a big tiara to go with her huge hair. But the dress....!!! It swallows her whole. I think Beatrix usually looks so good in her hats and day outfits, but her evening wear needs to be sleeker. She was a stunning bride and that style of dress looked very good on her. I know she's gained weight since then but a good designer can do wonders.
I am ashamed to admit she even wore this outfit two times before!!
Maxima wears this tiara really well.
Actually, since Maxima came on the scene a lot of the Dutch royal family's tiara's and other jewelry have come out of the boxes.
