Crown Princess Margarita of Romania busted out quite the heirloom sparkler for Victoria's wedding: this is the Romanian Greek Key Tiara, which came into the Romanian royal family when Queen Marie of Romania reportedly bought the tiara from her sister, Princess Victoria Melita -- who was always called the dignified nickname "Ducky" by her family members. Ducky was quite the dish -- she had made a scandalous second marriage to Grand Duke Kyril of Russia, and when the Russian imperial family hit hard times, she was forced to sell off her jewelry. Marie gave to Margarita's grandmother, Queen Helen (who was born a princess of Greece and Denmark), and it has remained in the family since then.
This one's a little bigger than the Greek key (or "meander") tiaras that I like, but heck, if you're going to have only one tiara, you might as well have a big one!
P.S.: Two pieces of trivia about Margarita:
1) Her college boyfriend at the University of Edinburgh was former British PM Gordon Brown, and
2) Before he married Margarita, her husband's name was Radu Duda. Radu Duda! Amazing.

Crown Prince Margarita and Prince Radu

Tough tiara to wear this one, bit she did look magnificent sparkling away.
I think she must have had sore feet though, because later in the evening after the cake was cut you saw Prince Henrik and her clearing a path through the crowd and heading off into a corner, where you could just see that she'd found a seat. Sensible lady!!
Great tiara
Awful dress
She makes this Tiara work! I love anything Greek Key even though this one might be to big for anyone else.
Prince Radu used to be an actor, and he's younger than Princess Margarita. She looks very good - I've always thought she was an attractive woman.
Agreed Ky, this is the first time I've ever saw her and watched her and heard her speak and I was quite taken by her. She could definitely be a huge asset for Romania. O well.
I like the fact she's wearing it like a headband. The greek key is fab, I really like it on her. THe dress is a bit too pouffy though.
I didn't know about the history of the tiara - very interesting!
Her husband is now officially HRH Prince Radu of Romania (and has been for some time).
I'm not sure that the chain of custody on this tiara is correct. Not because I know its history, but because there was a Queen Elisabeth of Greece, but she was not the sister of Victoria Melita, but her niece. Elisabeth of Greece was born a Hohenzollern princess of Romania. Her mother, born Marie of Edinburgh, was Queen of Romania. Marie was the sister of Victoria Melita, who had married Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia. Victoria Melita and her husband managed to escape Russia after the Revolution, but weren't able to bring many assets out except her jewels. Marie of Romania bought some of these jewels to help out her sister. This may be the origin of the tiara, bought by Marie of Romania and given to her daughter Elisabeth. If Elisabeth gave it to Helen of Greece, it would have been an unusual act of generosity. Elisabeth, who married Helen's brother George, King of Greece, was a notoriously selfish woman.Helen married Elisabeth's brother Carol, another notorious character. Carol and Helen were the parents of King Michael, or Mihai, the deposed King of Romania and father of Princess Margarita who is married to the Prince born with the colorful name, Radu Duda.
You're right, Jan -- I mixed up Elisabeth and her mother while tracking down the history of this bauble. Thanks for the heads up!
Is it just me or does Prince Radu creepily look like every portrayal of Dracula ever done? And from Romania to boot.
It's just you.
