The Crown Princess of Sweden's Wedding: HRH The Crown Princess of Sweden

And now, for the star of the show...

Victoria!  She looked so incredibly beautiful and happy on wedding day, didn't she?  A perfect royal bride.  The traditional Cameo Tiara looked far better than I thought it would, too -- I ended up really liking it as a bridal tiara by the end of the festivities.

As with Silvia's tiara, I'll let the Swedish royal court tell you a little about its provenance: "The word "cameo" means a precious stone decorated in raised relief.  The tiara is made of gold, pearls and cameos.  The central cameo depicts Cupid and Psyche from Greek mythology.  The seven cameos were not originally carved for the tiara, as can be seen in their different shapes and colours.

"The cameo tiara was also worn by Queen Silvia at the royal wedding on 19 June 1976.  The Crown Princess is therefore continuing a tradition started by Princess Birgitta.  She was the first Haga Princess to marry, and chose the cameo tiara for her wedding in 1961 to Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern.  Princess Désirée also chose the same tiara as her bridal crown when she married Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld in 1964.

"The tiara was probably a gift from Napoleon to his wife, Empress Josephine, in 1809.  It was made at the Nitot studio in Paris.  The empress bequeathed the tiara to her granddaughter Josefina who, on 19 June 1823, became the Crown Princess of Sweden when she married Crown Prince Oscar (the future King Oscar I).  With the next generation of the Bernadotte dynasty, the tiara was owned by Queen Josefina's daughter Princess Eugénie, who in turn left the tiara to her nephew Prince Eugen.  The prince gave the tiara to Princess Sibylla on her marriage to Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1932. The King was left the tiara by his mother."

Victoria's beautiful veil was also an heirloom piece:

The royal court tells us, "The Crown Princess is wearing Queen Sofia's lace veil. It is the same veil that was worn by Crown Princess Victoria's mother, Queen Silvia, at her marriage to King Carl Gustaf in 1976.  This veil was given by Queen Sofia to her youngest son, Prince Eugen.  Prince Eugen then passed the veil on to Princess Sibylla, who wore it under a garland of myrtle at her marriage to Prince Gustaf Adolf in Koburg in 1932.  Queen Sofia's veil was also worn by the Princesses Désirée in 1964, Margaretha in 1964 and Christina in 1974."

There were just too many great photos to choose from of Victoria on her wedding day, so I've included a few more below, including a full-length shot of her gown and some photos with her new prince. :)

If random hunks like that generally roam around Sweden, I may apply for a visa...

Victoria looked absolutely beautiful. The love between the happy couple was evident. What a wonderful day for Sweden!

  2. Lynette says on :

Victoria is absolutely flawless. Everything about her just glowed. She looked radiant.

  3. Ursula says on :

I like the tiara much better the way Victoria wore it. For some reason, it doesn't look as good on Sylvia.

  4. Lisa says on :

I was not happy when I heard this tiara would be the choice, but Victoria could not have been more elegant and beautiful! And if you watched her closely throughout the day, she is the ultimate princess: elegant and gracious. It was a long day and she never slipped - I really admire her!

  5. maggie says on :

What made the day for me was the overwhelming joy on Victoria's face throughout. She is clearly marrying the man of her dreams. So many lovely little moments throughout the day, that I'm sure touched everyone who saw them.

I was a bit 'meh' about the tiara, but when I saw it I was completely turned around. It was perfect for the occasion - in amongst all the sparkle it stood out. And her dress is perfect for her - simple, elegant and regal. And it behave so well - it looked immaculate all the way through. A perfect bride, on a wonderful day.

  6. Eliza says on :

I was opposed to her choice of tiara, cuz I really didn't like it, but this was made for Vics!!!

THREE CHEERS FOR THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF VASTERGOTLAND! HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY!!! HIP HIP HOORAY!!!

That pretty much describes my feelings, for, well the whole day. She looked blissful the swhole time, and so in love.

  7. Lise says on :

I cried, I smiled...and went "aw bless" a few times. They are so in love; the whole world peeled away and it was just the two of them.

  8. Margaret says on :

She is lovely and they look so happy!

  9. Kiri Anne says on :

The history on that tiara is fascinating! It looks just awesome on Victoria. And her dress! It is just my absolute fav of all the royal wedding dresses. So simple, yet so stunning and elegant!
Thanks again Ella for all the hard work - what a fun weekend!

  10. Mandy says on :

She looked stunning. Like others I wasn't keen on the cameo as a wedding tiara but on Victoria it looked amazing and simply perfect.

  11. PJ25 says on :

I was always a fan of the Cameo but even I did not expect it to look as good as it did on Victoria. Plus I lovelovelove the veil. Victoria just looks so happy and radiant and everything about her and that day was perfect. You can tell so many people love her by how many people cried of joy. Perfect. Plus, they've cleaned up the tiara. They've taken out the funny gold wires at the base and shined it up.

  12. Robyn says on :

Add me to the list of people that were skeptical when we heard that Victoria would be wearing the Cameo Tiara. I thought it was nice, but I guess the one photo of Silvia wearing it that was shown everywhere didn't do it justice, because I didn't think it would look very good on Victoria.

When she got out of the car, I was blown away; the gold of the Cameo looked great on her. The more I see Victoria wearing it, the more I like it on her, but let's be honest: she was glowing so much she could have made anything look lovely (although a baseball cap would have looked odd amongst all the royal bling).

And the gown is absolutely gorgeous. There is not one single thing about it that I do not love.

  13. Ky Person says on :

I love cameos and I love historical pieces so I was happy that Victoria wore this tiara. I wasn't expecting it to look so good on her - it was MADE for her!! And the dress was perfect, just perfect. Simple is best. I can't see this dress ever looking dated. And I don't know when I've ever seen a more radiant couple.

  14. RobinJ says on :

I was also not a very big fan of her wearing the cameos; It has always looked great on Silvia, but Silvia can wear any huge jewellery. I thought it would be to large for Victoria. But I'm a changed man; This was the perfect tiara! I also loved that she wore the earrings and the bracelet.

The dress was just perfect too! I was surprised that it was off-the-shoulder and with short sleeves, but I guess that if anyone could choose not to do the traditional royal wedding dress, Victoria would be the one, being the only female heir-appearent at the moment.

  15. Leslie says on :

Another member of the "I don't like the cameo tiara" club here...and another convert! The tiara worked perfectly on Victoria, I think because of it's size and the gold. It is absolutely the ultimate statement piece, and what could be more perfect on her wedding day?

I thought Victoria absolutely glowed, it was impossible not to smile watching the couple together all day. Clearly a love match, and clearly a pair who will support one another and be great partners in life.

Random question - I was watching one of the (many) videos on the Swedish TV station and in some of the shots from behind the Crown Princess (outside, maybe, on the balcony?) I noticed something green inside the back of the tiara. Perhaps a sprig of something tucked in for good luck at the far back? Did anyone else notice it, and does anyone know what it was? I saw it more than once, so I don't think it was a trick of the light...

  16. Marie says on :

Leslie, the green sprig she wore was a piece of myrtle.
You can read a bit more about it here under "The bridal veil"

  18. PJ25 says on :

They used to wear wee crowns made of Myrtle rather than tiaras back in the day. A forget the exact details, but a british princess married into the Swedish Royal Family a brought a myrtle tree with her. She planted it and all the brides have made their bridal crowns from it. But now they wear tiaras and use a bit of myrtle for luck.

  19. JamesB says on :

I have always liked the cameo, and loved it on Saturday. It is so huge and intricate that a fussy dress would be wrong, and Vic's was perfect with it. I love that it wasn't really stiff and formal like so many others, but my theory is that having been born a Princess Vic is comfortable in the role, unlike those marrying into royalty who go with dresses that seem to envelop them (Letizia in particular) in an effort to be 'regal'. This dress is very current, fitted well, looked stunning all day and seemed very Victoria. One of my favourite royal wedding dresses ever - and who could criticise with Victoria's ever present smile in place!

  20. Malou says on :

Just for information; the random hunk is Prince Carl Philip, Victoria's brother.

  21. Ella says on :

I know, Malou -- it was a joke! Trust me, I could recognize Carl Philip 500 miles away even if I were in a vegetative state. ;)

    Welcome to the blog!

  22. Ashley says on :

Ella-if you're ever in a vegetative state, we commentators promise to take up a collection to send Carl Philip to visit you and wake you up. Second choice, would be Beatrix in a cake hat, but CP would be more fun for you.

  23. Cece says on :

If she had worn a diamond tiara, no matter how beautiful....it would just be another diamond tiara. (Yes, I do see the funny side of that comment)
This set her apart as a bride should be-and the family history and tradition made a state occasion more personal. I was thrilled she wore it.

  24. Marg says on :

I think Victoria looked every inch a "Queen" when she walked up the aisle. If the Majestic sight of the dreaded Cameo rendered regal wasn't enough to sway you her fabulous dress and beautiful veil combined with her trademark megawatt smile not to mention her joy was contageous. She was romance personified.
