Gråsten Slot: HRH Princess Isabella of Denmark

Posted on July 30th, 2010 by Ella  |  8 Comments »

And now, a message from Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat:

What's up, you guys!?!  It's been way too long!  I mean, I've been TRYING to get Mom to put me in way more cute hats so we could hang out more often, but you know moms.  SIGH.

At least she let me wear another SUPER cute hair bow headband for one of my really important appearances in front of the paps.  Being a princess is a super demanding job, right?

I mean, when you're, like, one of the only princesses in the whole COUNTRY, they always put you in the front row!  Like, duh!  I'm WAY cuter than Christian, so it totally makes sense.  If only I had been able to, like, squeeze in a manicure into my DEMANDING schedule of princess duties!

For serious, the nail situation was totally dire.  (Christian told me that Princess Amalia told him that she gets manicures ALL THE TIME, especially for that big wedding that I WAS NOT INVITED TO.  Yeah, whatever, I noticed.  See if you get to come to my awesome wedding, Swedish people.  Anyway, if having pretty painted nails is good enough for, like, an Orange princess, it's totally good enough for me!)

But I, like, totally digress.

So, anyway, as you can see, Mary and I are getting along much better these days, even after her little buzz-kill freakout in April.  All was totally forgiven after she promised me BABY BROTHERS OR SISTERS!  Not one -- TWO!  A puppy would have been, like, totally awesome, but now I get to have real life baby dolls!  YES!  So, yeah, mom and I are cool again.

For now, anyway, I guess -- she probably just didn't see me when Christian DARED me to lick the window and the stupid PAPARAZZI caught me.

SO UNCOOL, CHRISTIAN.  Can't a PRINCESS even lick a window in private these days?  Totally HARSH, camera dudes.  (Also, P.S., please don't tell my mom ... at least not until after I get to dare the new babies to do it, too.  HOORAY!)

[Isabella would like me to thank lovely reader Eliza for sending me info about this event!] :)

1300th Anniversary of Ribe: HM The Queen of Denmark

Margrethe wore her prairie bonnet golf visor from the Vietnam state visit today to -- star in a new film version of Robin Hood?

No, just kidding -- Daisy and Henrik are out visiting a Danish town celebrating its 1300th anniversary today.  (1300th -- that's just incomprehensible to an American like me!  My ancestors were probably serfs farming in Europe back then!)

The hat is just as ridiculous as it was the last time, but it was far from the most ridiculous thing on this visit.  Case in point:

LOL!  Defend that castle, Henri!

Hattery Flashback: The Wedding of HM King Constantine II of Greece (1964)

Posted on July 28th, 2010 by Ella  |  20 Comments »

HM The King of the Hellenes and HRH Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark
September 18, 1964

Let the countdown to next month's royal wedding begin!  The last wedding of a member of a reigning Greek royal family was that of (then) King Constantine II of the Hellenes and Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark.  The couple, who are related several times over, wed in the Metropolis in Athens on September 18, 1964.  Constantine had become king a few months before, following the death of his father, King Paul.  Anne-Marie, who had turned eighteen only two weeks before, became the youngest queen in Europe.

Only three years later, however, a military coup forced Constantine and Anne-Marie from the country.  They fled to Rome, and eventually moved to live in exile in London.  The Greek monarchy was formally ended by a referendum in 1973, in which the people of Greece voted to create a republic.

This wedding, mostly because it took place nearly forty years ago, was a little tough to track down, picture-wise.  There were far more royal guests at the wedding wearing hats than listed below; the ones below are those I was able to find decent pictures of.  I've also included some of the clearer pictures of tiaras at a pre-wedding ball.

HRH Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark
HM The Queen of the Belgians
HM The Queen of Denmark
HM The Queen of The Netherlands
HM The Queen Regent of Thailand
HM Queen Friedrike of Greece
HM Queen Marie José of Italy
HRH Princess Claude d’Orléans, Duchess of Aosta

Wedding Hatters
September 18, 1964

HM The Queen of Greece
HM The Queen of Denmark
HM Queen Friedrike of Greece
HRH Infanta Sofía of Spain

There are many more royal hatters from the wedding for whom I haven't been able to find pictures.  For example, have a look at the family photo of the wedding:

Some of the royal hatters here for whom I don't have clear photos: Princess (now Queen) Margrethe of Denmark; Princess Benedikte; Princess Victoria Louise, Duchess of Brunswick; and some of the bridesmaids, including Princess Anne of the UK, Princess Christina of Sweden, Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Margarita of Romania.  Additionally, many foreign queens and princesses also attended the nuptials.  Anyone who has any closer photos of any of those guests, please feel free to pass them along (or link them in the comments!)

Visit to Tønder: HM The Queen of Denmark

Oh, Daisy, not another baldy hat!

Boo -- and I really thought we were getting somewhere when it came to hat shapes!  This one is just too big -- it looks like someone came over and tapped the top of the hat, and it sank down over HM's eyes.  (I was sure we'd seen this one on the blog before, but it appears to be a new -- to the blog, anyway -- baldy hat.)

At least the Great Dane and the Big H are having a swell time, as per usual, though!  Even a sub-par hat can't keep these two down...

Visit to Tønder: HRH Princess Marie of Denmark

Now here's the stylish Marie we all knew was lurking under some of those funny hats!  I'm not entirely sure, but I think this might be a repeat of this hat, worn last year on the royal yacht.

Loved it then; and I love this one now!  So chic!

Hattery News: The Queen's Year Exhibition

Posted on July 23rd, 2010 by Ella  |  11 Comments »

Attention all hatters in the Greater London area: there's an exhibit at Buck House this summer that absolutely cannot be missed!

Check it out -- it's a display of HM's Ascot hattery!  It's like a numbered, centralized version of the Mad Hattery! archives.  Here's a fun game -- identify which year we've seen each hat on HM at the races!  (I identify five here that we've seen on the blog...)

The exhibit, which also features some of HM's beautiful gowns and Prince Phil's naval uniform, opens up on Tuesday.  Unfortunately, I'm too far away to make this particular pilgrimage -- but if any of you hatters make it over there, be sure to give us a full report on how these toppers look up close! :)

Hebridean Princess: HM The Queen

Posted on July 23rd, 2010 by Ella  |  31 Comments »

I took my holiday last week -- now it's the Windsors' turn for a vacation!  They're loading up on a yacht called the "Hebridean Princess" for a cruise of the Scottish isles.  And, of course, HM has dipped into her Hermès collection to keep the royal coiffure under control.

The scarf's fine and all, but there's something else:

You might imagine it's the lack of Yorkie hattery that's caught my eye here, but while that is indeed tragic, I'm looking at something else: Liz is wearing PANTS.  Doesn't that look strange???

Garden Party: HM The Queen

Nick Griffin may have tried to pull a fast one on Her Maj at this garden party, but Lil clearly doesn't look fussed about the whole thing -- and she's worn one of my favorites of her hats, too!  I don't even care that she wore it a month ago at Ascot -- it's just lovely.

(Don't love the gold hat pin, though -- even my gran had pearly hat pins; surely the palace had one laying around that would coordinate better with the earring/necklace combo?)

Belgian National Day - Military Parade: HRH The Duchess of Brabant

It's a hattery two-fer today for Mathilde -- and this year, the bold, bright color for the military parade is orange!  Love the little cropped jacket on Mathilde, and I'm thisclose to loving the wide-brimmed hat.  Make the crown a little lower -- it's reading "nineteenth-century midwestern American farmer" to me -- and heck, make the entire thing orange!  Go big or go home!

(Also -- that's Queen Fab over in the corner!  So disappointed at the lack of hattery this year, Lady F...)

Belgian National Day - Military Parade: HI&RH Princess Astrid of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este

Princess Astrid continues to be the Princess Anne of Belgium, doesn't she?  Love a girl who can rock a uniform!

(Sidenote: the dude on the left is Prince Joachim, Astrid and Lorenz's eighteen-year-old son.  He's been away at school in England.  Unfortunately, it's starting to look like he may not have inherited the princely hotness of his older brother, Amadeo.  Oh, well -- there's always time for latent hunkiness to bloom!)
