Braemar Gathering: HM The Queen

Lil and her firstborn are certainly having quite the tee-hee at Braemar, aren't they?  I only wish I were quite so enthusiastic about her hat.

I think all these years of hatting about have just made me miserably picky when it comes to chapeaux, but something about the combo of the taupe and the light ivory just isn't doing it for me.  Thoughts?

(Additionally -- HM, Phil, and Charlie get fancy wicker chairs, but Anne gets a foldy deal?  Man, it's tough being the second born!)

Hmmm. It's nice, but just a tad bland. There's nothing outwardly wrong with the ensemble. The hat is 'Lil's tried and tested shape, which is once again flattering, but I just wish the colour choice had been slightly more adventurous - HM suits strong colours. It's all a tad twee and safe.

Maybe she's trying to blend in with the highland heath. I guess since it's a semi-off duty occasion she doesn't have to wear her usual "I'm over here" colours. It's OK, I like the shape and the band & flower are nice, but it is a bit bland. Still I wouldn't want to distract the caber tossers and hammer throwers - imagine the mayhem!

  3. Kiri Anne says on :

Sorry Ella, I like it. Maybe if it was a tad shorter? It seems too tall.

  4. maggie says on :

Could this be the Sir Tom and James of the Highlands?

  5. maggie says on :

    Darn linky - try again

  6. William says on :

She tends to wear highland heath colours to Braemar, and these pastels seem to reflect the soft palettes of the 1950s for which she might have a nostalgic affection. In any case it is very good to see her knees again. The Queen has always had wonderful legs and she still does, at 84!

  7. Lisa says on :

HM looks like she is bundled up for winter! Is it really cold in Scotland right now?

  8. Twisted Sister says on :

I think the crown (ha) is a touch too tall. I'm also not fond of the mint green--it seems to wash her out a bit.

  9. Annie says on :

I do like this style on her. It really reminds me of the Mad Hatter from Alice. So, whenever she wears this style of hat, I see a bit of whimsy in it and smile.

She doesn't often wear bland beige, but it's an okay look on her. You know what I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see, a picture of her in one of her tartan highland ball gowns that I hear she wears to the fabulous parties she throws where lively Scottish dancing takes place! Now THAT would be a trill!

  10. maggie says on :

Annie, Only pic I can find of the ghillie's ball is here. Normally ladies wear a tartan sash at a posh ceilidh, not a tartan skirt - those are left for the boys!

  11. Annie says on :

Oh thank you, Maggie. Unfortunately, the link did not work for me.

  12. Ella says on :

Linking from Getty is a little tricky in general, but I find that if I click on the link and then refresh the page, the photos almost always show up for me.

Damnit. You found me and Sir Tom in our summer plumage! And I thought we were so well disguised!

Love love love the hat. It's a repehat from about 4 years ago (ie pre MH) but none the worse for it. She looks smashing!

  14. Ky Person says on :

The queen looks very nice and I do like the hat. It must be cold there - she's bundled up like me in the winter.

  15. looseal says on :

They all look great. And the gold feather brooch - that's a new one for me.

Nice to see Admiral Tim there but I wonder why Camilla is no-show.

  16. Sir Tom says on :

James, we just can't hide away, can we?

  17. Sir Tom says on :

In other news, Getty reckon that old thrifty Lil has a hole in her old court shoes. Surely not. I know she's a bit tight with money, but the sodding Queen can't have holes in her shoes? I reckon she trod on a fly.

  18. Ursula says on :

The colors look like a light mint-green set off by contrasting forest green, to me. I like it. I think she looks great in it.

  19. Eliza says on :

Sir Tom and James, detective Maggie has found her two out again! You really should learn how to do a disguise :) I quite like this hat, actually- the colours are nice for a highland party.

  20. Arlene says on :

Oh, dear. It appears I am somewhat in the minority again, but I think the queen looks simply smashing. I thought the color was just barely green. And I thought the hat was wonderful. Sigh, maybe it is my age showing.

A repeat outfit first seen at Queens Univeristy Belfast during her April 08 Northern Ireland visit

  22. Richard. says on :

A beautiful outfit; the hat perfectly matched to the dress and coat, as always.
The brooch was presented to Her Majesty at the Highland Gathering a few years ago, and now she always wears it to the event.
Thank-you Maggie for the delightful library photograph of The Queen in her ballgown and tartan sash - the very same gown which is now on show in the summer exhibition at Buckingham Palace, and thank-you, Ella, for the advice (the link also failed to work for me until I took your advice and refreshed the page!)

Re: Photo 2: We always wondered what the Miss Piggy face was. Here it is. Put the name plate under the picture.

I think Charles is playing the bagpipes. Anne finds it uproariously funny. Nice to have a sibling who understands your sense of humor.

Where's Camilla been? Fed up with her air-bagpipe playing spouse?
