Nobel Prize Ceremony 2010: HM The Queen of Sweden

I've got to say, I'm giving the Nobel Prize for Best Dressed at the Nobel Prize Ceremony to Queen Sil this year.  (I'm totally allowed to distribute that prize, clearly, as the Master Hatter!) ;)  Partly it's because I love love love this emerald green color, and partly it's because she's treating us by wearing a tiara that's new to the blog!

This is the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure Tiara, which, like several others in the Swedish collection, is a legacy from Napoleon.  He gave it as a wedding present to his adopted son and daughter-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Leuchtenberg, who later passed it on to their daughter, Joséphine.  Jo then married the king of Sweden and Norway, Oscar I, and the rest, as they say, is tiara history.  Silvia wears this one a lot; it was also a favorite of the previous Swedish queen (and Prince Philip's aunt), Queen Louise.

I have to admit, though ... as tiaras go, this one's not my favorite.  It's blingy as all get out, of course, but there's something so fortress-y about the veritable wall of diamonds with sapphire toppers.  I anticipate many of you will disagree -- so what do you think?

I totally agree with you about Silvia being best-dressed this year. The dress has some Mette-Marit style ruffles on it too. Very lovely. I couldn't place this tiara from the live broadcast. Thanks for having (or getting) the scoop on it - where does all your information come from?? And you are correct - it does look like a fortress.

  2. Ella says on :

@Kikky: It's years of interest and some really good detective work! :) No, seriously, with these big, fancy, historical pieces, the provenance is usually pretty easy to track down.

And you're right, the ruffles are very MM! Missed her and Madeleine at this year's Nobel-palooza.

  3. Leslie says on :

Love, love, love! I love the emerald green color, and I adore the sapphire parure. I think the tiara looks exactly as it should on Silvia: queen-like.

I disagree about the ruffles being MM-like. MM tends to wear flouncy ruffles. These are more tailored, and they're just perfect. Home run, Silvia!

  4. KyPerson says on :

I like that tiara. Sylvia can carry off just about any kind of jewelry - even big and blingy pieces like this one. I wonder how she'd look in the huge Luxemborg tiara that overwhelms Maria Teresa's petite height?

  5. Ursula says on :

    Spectacular. She oozes "Queen".

  6. Sir Tom says on :

Everey inch the Queen here. I adore this parure, and the dress is stunning. Fabulous.
And I say this every time, but she is an amazingly well preserved woman. Obviously bathes in milk.

  7. maggie says on :

Wow. That is some statement dressing there - whatever gossip is going on, that is a real 'I am Queen and above it all' display. She looks amazing. Ella, you're quite right, it does have a 'fortress' quality to it, but maybe she's feeling in need of some armour plating at the moment.

The colour is perfect on her too.

  8. Patricia says on :

Silvia carries the grand, majestic pieces so well and by her carriage and pose, you know it! I love everything about her look: the color, the neckline of the gown, even the fortress tiara with all the accompanying jewels. She looks very formidable this year.

  9. Ursula says on :

Is it possible to get a full-length view of Sil standing up?

  10. Grace says on :

I think I would like the tiara a bit better if it weren't just the wall of diamonds with a few sapphires sticking out of it, maybe if there were some other sapphires sprinkled in there.

  11. Malluu says on :

I completely agree with Queen Silvia being best dressed. She looks amazing. I however disagree about the tiara. It's perfect for her but would overwhelm someone less regal.

  12. Eliza says on :

Silvia looks great, and I actually like this tiara a lot. It's very fortress-like, granted, but for some reason it looks good as a style for this design.

  13. Massenet says on :

    In a word: GORGEOUS.

  14. James B says on :

You say veritable wall of diamonds like like it's a bad thing?! ;-) ) I love the sapphires. It's a truly bling set and as ever, Silv's dramatic dress sense complements them perfectly. She looks regal and glamorous, not a combo most Queens manage (I know I can't :-) ). A home run here! Bravo!

  16. Yvonne says on :

Queen Sil looks like THE QUEEN. Good for her, with all the horrible stories coming out about her husband.
The tiara says it all really-it looks like a crown that only a queen could wear.
    I think she looked magnificent.

  17. Lynette says on :

I Love the dress, and I Love the tiara...but why not emeralds with that gorgeous dress? Why sapphires?

    I know...picky! picky!

  18. Patricia says on :

I was thinking the same thing, Lynette. I love her look and I'm a sucker for sapphires, but I think emeralds would have been a magnificent match. Maybe Sylvia was going for contrast; at least she didn't choose rubies and light up like a Christmas tree!

  19. alpa says on :

the color contrast btwn blue stones and green dress is the only thing i don't like here, too.

but love everything else! the tiara (the whole set) is magnificent. silvia has always had the ability to carry the most intimidating set of jewels; she always looks regal and queenly, never overwhelmed.

in part, it's her focus on having the perfect tiara hair. no loose and straggly or too tight hair from her. silvia, and her early adoption of hair pieces, manages to balance hair size, formality and intricacy appropriately with the piece.

this is a lesson she's passed on to her daughters, who (usually) get it right, in the same manner.

  20. PJ25 says on :

Agree with everyone else, there is no mistaking who is the Queen here. I rather love this parure and the emerald colour of the dress just makes the blue of the sapphires pop! Another good show Silv.

  21. Patricia says on :

I, too, always liked Sylvia's attention to hair detail when wearing her massive tiaras, and that's why she carries them so well and regally. Her hair is always in proportion to the type of tiara she wears and what would overwhelm most looks so balanced on her head. I also noticed how beautiful Victoria's tiara hair looked when I saw views of the side and back. Two marvelous ladies!

  22. Cece says on :

I like the sapphires with this teal, since there is so much blue in this green. Emeralds would have been a little too matchy matchy. Part of Silvia's magnificent jewel presentation is her always perfect posture, standing or sitting. Shoulders back, neck elegant, chin up.

  23. scarebaby says on :

    Bling to the max!!

  24. scarebaby says on :

Sidenote: I just looked up Queen Silvia, and turns out her birthday is coming right up! Dec 23. Happy birthday to her! (hope she gets a new tiara for a gift!)

  25. Robin J says on :

I do understand what you mean with the Leuchtenberg tiara being a "diamond fortress", but I must say this is my favorite piece; The sapphires have a wonderful deep blue color, the design is delicate up close, yet impressive from afar... (The design really reminds me alittle about the cameo tiara, but with saphires instead of cameos and diamonds instead of pearls...)

I thought the combo green dress - blue jewels was a bit wierd at first, but I can live with it. I think this color green is perfect for Queen Silvia!
