Imperial New Year Gala: HIM The Empress of Japan

Thanks to lovely reader Brian for sending in photos from this year's Imperial New Year Gala!  It's one of the few Tiara Alert occasions that we get each year from the Japanese imperial family.

Here's Empress Michiko in the Imperial Chrysanthemum Tiara, the same tiara she wore to last year's gala.  Quite an impressive floral piece!

That is a glorious tiara and I love the fans the ladies always wear, but I don't care for the Empress' gown. It's too bulky for her slight frame and it could have done without those medieval trailing sleeves. I also don't care for all that fussy banded embroidery. It would have been nicer for a richer-looking embossed material or a pearly white that had a sheen to it and maybe some beading. And what's with that strip of embroidered material across her hips going in the opposite direction of that sash? No, please. But I love this couple and how the Emperor is so solicitous of his wife by steadying her - too sweet.

Such a gorgeous tiara, and she does have good hair for it too.

Such a beautiful tiara. I bet it really glistened against the black hair of her youth. Florals really do seem to have a certain edge to them.
The dress is neither here nor there. A bit of a tablecloth, and probably a bit too voluminous for a woman of her stature. Not the greatest.

It's a gorgeous flower, I love how it almost wraps around her head. The dress seems to have plenty of random pieces of fabric strewn down. But thankfully she chose a white dress au lieu of any any colour, because red and yellow don't match much else!

Is this the only tiara she ever wears? You would think as an the Empress of Japan she would have a larger selection.
