Official Visit to Vietnam - Ho Chi Min City: HRH Princess Máxima of The Netherlands

Posted on March 30th, 2011 by Ella  |  17 Comments »

Okay, hatters, that's it -- I'm never opening my big fat mouth again, because I think I'm developing the power to conjure up bad hats on royals.  Case in point?  On day one of this official visit, I linked to the cardboard 'n shoelaces disaster that Máx sported in Mexico on a state visit, and today...

Ahhhhh!  Seriously.  Am I some sort of hattery wizard now?  Does writing a royal hat blog for nearly three years do this to a person?  Or was it the fact that you enthusiastic hatters posted your 10,000th comment on the blog this week?!? Hmm...

At least Máx was sorry enough about repeating this little millinery creation that she swapped it out for something a bit more ... hygenic later in the day:

Here's a sentence I know I've never uttered on the blog before -- Camilla wins this hattery throwdown!

Time for a British Royal Family spin-off?  CSI: Buck House?

Good thing Lil's there with one of her trusty repe-hats to help solve the crime!  (Maybe a deerstalker next time, though, ma'am?  I hear they're excellent help in cracking cases...

Le Maire Opening: HM The Queen of The Netherlands

Lovely reader Maggie sent me this picture, along with the following concerns about Queen Bea's sartorial sanity:

"I think Beatrix may be a secret Clint Eastwood fan..."  Agreed, Maggie -- that is a LOT of fringe on a monarch!

Also -- how about a rare, skybox view of the top layer of a cake hat?

Delectable! :)

Official Visit to Vietnam - Presidential Palace: HRH Princess Máxima of The Netherlands

Oh, Máx ... LMAO!  You forgot a hat for the opening day of your official visit to Vietnam, so you had Willem-Alexander whip one up for you out of two straw baskets on the plane ride over?!?

It's like an unholy combination of the corrugated cardboard disaster, the plaid turban debacle, and a tornado.  I can't, you guys.  It's just too insane!

Gatcombe Horse Trials: Mrs. Peter Phillips and Miss Savannah Phillips

Posted on March 26th, 2011 by Ella  |  10 Comments »

Get ready, everyone ... it's time for a hattery debut!

It's the newest little Windsor lady, Savannah Phillips, daughter of Peter and Autumn!  How adorable is she in her little pink and yellow hat!  So cute!

Her adorable mom was also along at the horse trials, pushing the stroller:

Autumn is still the queen of casual hattery in the BRF ... can't quite tell what's on this baseball cap, though.  A tiger?

Anyway -- to reward her excellent hattery efforts, Autumn got a little break from pushing the pram:

Aww ... proud royal grandparents! :)

Yes, okay, Anne's hat makes her look a little like a retired naval officer touring a ship or inspecting troops or something.  But really, for Anne at a horse event, couldn't this be way worse?  Maybe she borrowed it from her husband, the Vice-Admiral standing next to her.  (Hi, Tim!)

Windsor Great Park: HRH Princess Beatrice of York and HRH Princess Eugenie of York

So, hatters, Princess Eugenie turned the big 2-1 this week!  But instead of the crazy-pants night of partying you might have expected from our dear Yorkies, they decided on a slightly more hatter-ific way to mark the occasion: a bike ride through Windsor Great Park.  (The Yorks' house, Royal Lodge, is nearby.)

Clearly "Eugie" felt left out of Caterpillar Run Trucker Hat Madness '10 and demanded her own version -- I like that she's even taken a cue from Smiley Boyfriend DAVE and gone for all caps.  (DAVE was biking along with them, but sadly, sans chapeau.  Next time, DAVE?  Please?)

It might just be the angle, but it looks like the over-risen cupcake hat has sprouted a few new plumes this go around...

Funeral of Princess Antoinette: HRH Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Miss Charlotte Casiraghi

All four of Princess Caroline's children also attended their great-aunt's funeral.  Charlotte (who, incidentally, is named for Rainier and Antoinette's mother, Princess Charlotte -- Alexandra also has Charlotte as a middle name in honor of her) chose a beautiful lace veil similar to those worn by her mother and her aunt.  Alexandra's white lace veil is lovely and still age-appropriate; traditionally, mourning attire for children (like Alexandra) was white or gray rather than black.

Funeral of Princess Antoinette: HRH The Princess of Hanover, Hereditary Princess of Monaco and HSH Princess Stéphanie of Monaco

While Charlene chose a slightly shorter chapel veil for Princess Antoinette's funeral, her soon-to-be sisters-in-law opted for longer veils, worn over the head and then draped over the shoulder.  I think both versions are equally chic and appropriate for celebrating a long-lived life.

Also, there are two more veiled Grimaldi women in this photo: the two ladies behind Caroline and Stéphanie are Antoinette's daughter and granddaughter, Elisabeth-Anne and Mélanie-Antoinette de Massy.  (Believe it or not, this is also actually Stéphanie's very first appearance on the blog...)
