While Charlene chose a slightly shorter chapel veil for Princess Antoinette's funeral, her soon-to-be sisters-in-law opted for longer veils, worn over the head and then draped over the shoulder. I think both versions are equally chic and appropriate for celebrating a long-lived life.
Also, there are two more veiled Grimaldi women in this photo: the two ladies behind Caroline and Stéphanie are Antoinette's daughter and granddaughter, Elisabeth-Anne and Mélanie-Antoinette de Massy. (Believe it or not, this is also actually Stéphanie's very first appearance on the blog...)

I do like the longer veils very much. Classic yet chic.
It's interesting that many of the Roman Catholic churches in Europe hold on to the tradition of women wearing veils once inside the church. My Mom used to wear them when I was very young as they were absolutely required for adult women. But, she soon stopped wearing a veil shortly after the modernization efforts of Vatican II.
Women were required to wear a head covering, not necessarily a veil. We wore hats.
I love these veils. SOOOO gorgeous!
But Steph, you've kept us waiting!
I remember as a child going to Roman Catholic mass wearing a chapelette, as we called it, a small circle of white lace to cover just the top of your head. Either that or a hat was acceptable for church. But these long flowing veils are absolutely sumptuous!
These long veils are beautiful. If you're going to wear one, you may as well make it a whopper. Charlene wears them beautifully.
The only problem I see with Charlene's shorter veil (and why I'm leaning more toward the longer veils) is that she always seems to be holding on to it. I'm not familiar with veil-wearing, but is there a clasp or something she could use to keep it on her head?
I always wore a hat, chapel veil or mantilla to Mass when I was a kid. I haven't for a long time now, but lately I've been getting the urge to wear one again and I like Charlene's. I'm not all that fond of the wrap around look like Caroline is wearing. Charlene looks very nice here.
I love how gracefully Charlene is adapting Monaco's traditions and catholic faith. (And yes I did inted the pun. She reminds me of Princess Grace.)
Veils were never removed from the "rules of etiquette" for the Church - they just got scrapped (along with a lot of appropriate reverences and good music) in the kafoffle that became known as "the spirit of Vatican II." THANKFULLY - a growing number of women are resuming wearing veils and mantillas - and I say it's about time!
They are truly beautiful, and even plain women look elegant and well-groomed while wearing one.
So, Ky - go for it! You may find that you are not alone, or you may give other women in your parish the courage to pick this beautiful headgear up again. Heaven knows, we NEED a return to these niceties.
