State Visit from Luxembourg - Gala Dinner: HM The Queen of Norway

One more tiara alert from tonight's gala dinner: here's Queen Sonja in a tiara that's (sort of) new to the blog!  This is the full setting of Queen Maud's Pearl Tiara.  We've seen her in the small version before, but here she's worn it with the large front piece that completes the historical tiara.  (Er, or the replacement version of the historical tiara, anyway -- more on the Great Norwegian Tiara Heist of '93 here.)

I must say, I kinda prefer the other setting of this tiara. Whilst this lovely (and looked stunnning on Queen Maud with her large edwardian barnet), the second setting does Sonja more justice. And this is coming from someone who normally loves tiaras to be as big as possible.

Is it just my rather willful imagination, or does it appear that the footman in the background is lost in deep thought about how much HE covets Queen Maud's Pearl Tiara?
Aside from a bit too much 'swoop' to her bangs that hides part of the tiara (maybe just the camera angle) Queen Sonja looks absolutely regal and fabulous.

I love this full version, and as per Sonja has the best tiara hair on the royal block. But that dress. Oh dear Lord - it's a stinker. Lovely colour but the black and white stripes are not working love.

I have to agree with Sir Tom; I like the other manifestation of this tiara much more, but Sonja knows how to rock a tiara. And, yes, the footman does indeed look like he's pondering what a couple of those pearls must be worth a year's salary!

Good grief, who's the scruff at the back??? It's a state dinner man, I think that shaving is the least you could do!!

I quite like this setting - her hair is big enough to carry it off. Normally pokey-uppy bits are a big no for me, but that big front balances the whole thing.

I've never seen such unclean footman, but I think he has every right to be bored - how exciting could be a speech in Luxembourgish?

Did anyone notice the lovely wallpaper behind Queen Sonja's right shoulder?

The pearls are a little spindly for me--sort of like how we complain about the Amethyst Necklace Tiara? But she does know how to pull this off!

Thats a beautiful tiara and quite a change from the emerald one she wears often. I like every bit of it. It looks queenly.
What a dish is the grand duke. I must learn about Luxembourg and see what it is about. I have a vague recollection that it may be the last vestige of the Holy Roman Empire. Or was that Lichtenstein? I have to look it up.

  9. VH says on :

Luxembourg is a nice little Grand Duchy, which actually split from The Netherlands, because of different inheritance laws, in 1890 (locals didn't quite like females on the throne back then).

  10. nancy says on :

I read about the two L and L little countries today and learned that it is Liechtenstein that is the "last vestige" of the Holy Roman Empire. It has a very romantic castle to go with the title.

I like this. But the I have zeen very few tiaras I don't like (Sophie Wessex's wedding tiara being one of them). I ewen like her dress wich is unusual becouse typically I don't like horizontal stripes on formal gowns.

I think the footman looks like an assassin.

I like this version of the tiara and I love Queen Maud. Now, I have to go read abou this tiara heist!

There is a link to the blog happy-go-lovely:

    http://happygolovely.tumblr.com/post/1310226547/oh-you-know-just-some-average-wedding-presents

which depicts the wedding presents for Maud, even if the author of the blog has tagged it wrong. Those were the times when royal brides got lots of jewelry as wedding gifts!

I wonder if the diamond tiara would be the Vasa tiara??

Where might have the necklace gone?
