State Visit from South Korea - State Banquet: HRH The Crown Princess of Denmark

I got a TON of e-mails about this little tiara alteration! :)  Here we've got Crown Princess Mary (who looks like the four kids have been keeping her awake at night, poor dear) wearing her wedding tiara; but the sparkler that so many of us have derided as sparse and boring has been upgraded with new pearls atop the spike elements and a new row of pearls around the base.

So ... I don't know if I like the change.  I know, I know, I'm impossible to please when it comes to tiaras!  I'm going to throw this to the gallery -- what do you hatters think of the change?

I'd like it better if the pearls weren't such a sloppy addition. The former tiara sits higher on the pearl base on the left rather than the right. And that is taking its wonky head placement into account. lol

  2. brian says on :

i think i like it...i also think that it would look better if she had a higher hair do to set it off...

  3. Tara says on :

Is it just me or does the tiara look a little crooked? It dosen't look like its centered properly.

  4. Eliza says on :

Oh, WAAAAYYYYYYYYYY better. It looks so much less sparse and diamonds stick out more with the contrast with the pearls. LOVE.

  5. PJ25 says on :

I've always gone against the majority opinion and been a big fan of the smaller original version although I like the idea behind this one. I feel I need to see it again to make a final decision, but I hope its not a permanent alteration.

I have to admit I don't care for the tiara in this version. Part of the problem is that it's placed very badly. It's crooked and the way Mary's hair is parted makes the tiara look even more tilted. Whoever does Mary's hair needs to look at how Princess Claire of Belgium wears her tiara. The tiara is small and delicate, but it's placed so well that it looks very good on her.

  7. PlaidLeslie says on :

Ugh. It looks like she hit the craft shop and then sat up late and night with her glue gun. I love pearls but they add nothing to this tiara. The pearls at the base are a huge mistake, because it makes the entire thing look wonky if it's not perfectly aligned on her head. The plain base was much more forgiving. I can live with the pearls on the spikes, but they don't really serve any purpose. But the line of pearls at the base MUST GO.

  8. Kikky says on :

It's still not a great tiara, but I do believe it's at least better. It looks less like a barbed wire fence atop her head at least.

  9. Lise says on :

Remove "string" of pearls at base, keep pearls on spikes. They need to explore sturdier hairstyle to keep it centered. I think that far and away expression shows she has babies on her mind.

  10. PJ25 says on :

I think if the pearls on the base and on top were a size smaller and the tiara widen'd out it would look much more elegant and coherent.

  11. nancy says on :

I like this tiara and think it has been improved a lot with the pearls. It looks more complete now. But is it tilted on Mary's head, or is that just the camera angle?

  12. maggie says on :

"Wheeee!" went the tiara, as it slid off Mary's head.

I think the pearls are a definite improvement - this did need a bit more bulk to it. But a skoosh of Elnett and a couple of kirby grips could have improved things immeasurably.

  13. Patricia says on :

I really like the improvement; I think the band of pearls eliminates the unevenness of the tiara edge and it looks less gappy. I always thought this tiara was too sparse and incomplete for a Crown Princess. Maybe with further use she'll fine tune the placement. But, wow, Mary's part emphasizes the tilt of the tiara. And the center motif to the left should have been sitting directly on the plumb line of her part. As an aside, those earrings are absolutely stunning; look at the size of the pearls and surrounding diamonds.

  14. cece18 says on :

the pearls on the bottom do look craft shoppish. A line of diamonds would be better. But the pearls on the top are all right.
It definitely looks like it is sitting crooked on her head. I want to lift her chin and see straight on if it is listing lower on her right side. Her hair doesn't help- the part is not centered-it is over her left eye-but the part and the tiara center create a weird optical illusion that is disturbing.

  15. Suze says on :

With this tiara change, I like the pearls on top of the spikes but not the row of pearls at the base. Then, I do not know why it is on askew unless Lady Catherine Percy has started a new trend in tiara wearing!

  16. Paula says on :

Her tiara is a little crooked but I think it's emphasized by the slightly off center part in her hair. Kate Middleton had the same thing going on with her tiara on her wedding day. I was just a tiny bit distracted by the line of the part and the fit of the tiara.

What distracts me more is the shoulder pads (epaulettes??) under the sheer sleeve of the dress. I know it's meant to be that way but to me it looks like a cheaper type dress with itty bitty shoulder pads.

I think she looks good for having 4 young children under the age of 5. I'd probably be there in my sweats, bags under the eyes, asleep and drooling at the table if I were in her place.

  17. Kiri Anne says on :

I think I like it. But I'm not sure. I just feel like giving her a hug, and a cup of coffee. I don't care how much help you have - four kids is four kids.

  18. Matthew says on :

I'm not crazy about the pearls on the base. They look like an afterthought. I get the idea of Pearls and Diamonds, but this diesn't do it for me. Perhaps a varegated--pearl, diamond, pearl, diamond, in groupings would help. Frankly, it looks a little like some of the 19th cent. photos of bejeweled English aristocrats who stacked their tiaras with jewels for a portrait or a special event, and didn't use a jeweler with an "eye" for the overall effect.

  20. JamesB says on :

I really like what she's done here - I think the pearls make it a totally different tiara, and with a lot more oomph than before. THis will never be a great tiara, but this does at least give it some more presence. But oh, the wonky positioning. Whatthehell Mary love?!

  21. Sir Tom says on :

It's about time she did something to it, and I for one think it looks a damn sight better. It always resembled a fence in my eyes, so some pearls really doe lend it soem gravitas. As James says, it will never be great, but it has been definitely improved.
Just sort out your positioning, Mary, love, and all will be well. Or, just wear your nice ruby monster for us. :)

I apologise for the state of my spelling. Writing essays all day clearly hasn't helped.
