State Visit from the USA - State Banquet: HRH The Princess Royal

Thanks to all the wonderful hatters who e-mailed me photos and screencaps of Princess Anne in the Meander Tiara that once belonged to her grandmother, Princess Andrew of Greece, at the state banquet.  I'm lightyears behind in answering e-mail, so if you haven't heard back from me personally, please don't be offended. :)

Lovely reader Shannon sent in this screencap -- several others also linked to this photo from the Daily Mail (scroll to the bottom of the page).  An excellent tiara outing for Annie ... a low-key piece for a low-key princess, but a piece with a wonderful historical provenance nonetheless.

It is a lovely tiara. I wouldn't say it was low key, but it doesn't shout bling at you. I suppose it just gets a bit lost in Anne's cottage loaf.

Could we see this on Zara in July? Bit of an outsider choice, perhaps, but she's not that conventional herself.

Doesn't Annie look nice here. That dress is lovely, and the garter sash is really well positioned. The tiara even sits really nicely in her spin sugar do. I do wish they'd provide us with better state dinner pics... grr...

On anyone else this would be epic, but Anne's giant hairdo would make the Imperial State Crown look low-key. This does suit her though - it's not fussy or frippery, it's businesslike bling. Suits her perfectly. I think I've remarked on it before, but what terrific skin she has in the chest area - she's obviously not been one for lying on the beach getting fried (raises eyebrows in the direction of the Pips and Duchess Kate)

I'd have loved to see a more substantial tiara in Anne's hair, because she could certainly carry it off. The Meander looks like a headband since it's more sunk in her hair this time and to see one that stands out more would have been a treat. But it's lovely and so is the gown; the bodice is cut well and shows her shoulders and chest to advantage. Avoiding the sun really does has its advantages! And hopefully we'll see this tiara on Zara as well for her wedding.

Probably the Fringe tiara for Zara at her wedding.

Anne looks great, except for the sour puss. She does however need a more substantial tiara that can cope with her hair. I don't care for this tiara at all.

For years I have seen photos of PH in which I thought she looked gloomy, spiritless, sour, etc. Now, in my old age, I am thinking that this is quite simply her serious expression, from which we should not read an emotion. I have seen it so often that it must be how she looks when she is paying attention to something important, serious or even world-shaking. Nobody could have been gloomy for the past 40 years.

And by the way, I would like the tiara if it showed up a bit better. Love the dress and wrap.

  8. Lise says on :

The sides of her 'do resemble her Mums! And don't bet on fancy headgear for Zara (or anybody, for that matter) and Mike's vows; as she doesn't have a Title.

  9. Susan says on :

I love the tiara but her hairstyle overpowers it.

The Princess Royal is so very poised and beautiful in this tiara and dress. I am still enamored with her wedding dress and tiara which she wore in 1973-the best of the brides in my book.

Love this little blinger and I do hope we see it on Zara in July!
