Zara Phillips's Wedding: Mrs. Michael Tindall

And now, saving the best for last: the blushing bride!  And a Tiara Alert!  I was so nervous she wasn't going to wear one, but of course the new Mrs. Tindall wouldn't let us down!  (Well, technically she's now Mrs. Michael Tindall -- it was announced today that she'll be keeping her name, so Zara Phillips she'll remain.)

As for the tiara: it's Princess Andrew's Meander Tiara, an heirloom once owned by Zara's great-grandmother, Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark (Prince Philip's mother).  Somehow, it's just perfect for Zara, the royal granddaughter with the Greek name -- modern, simple, and low-key, but still totally gorgeous.

Congratulations, Zara!  May you and Mikey T have many years of sporting happiness!

Mikey T... LOLOLOL! Mikey T and Smiley DAVE. Only here :)

I love this tiara, and on Zara is looks way better than buried in her mom's hair!

  2. fanofshinyhats says on :

I have never liked this tiara, I confess.

But it really shines here (pardon the pun). Set up (instead of, as Eliza says "buried in") on the hair the tailored aspect of it really comes through.

I also love how the veil is attached to her hair at the back, and not to the tiara so the light can shine through the design. It was also beautifully poufy as she walked into the church. I'm a sucker for a 60s-era-esque poufy veil.

So, so, so happy she decided to wear a tiara ! ! ! She looked so beautiful wearing it too. I just couldn't picture her in the fringe tiara (like her mother and grandmother before her wore at their weddings), but would have been delighted if she wore that one instead. Her dress is so pretty too. What a happy day!

  4. Emily says on :

Goodness, she really does look lovely, doesn't she? And they both look so happy! I don't think I've seen a single photo of them today where they're not beaming.

I don't know whether it's the simplicity or the shape, but the tiara both really stands out and really complements her whole look. I kinda hope that this is maybe a long-term loan, and we'll see Zara at some more tiara-events with it soon.

That dress is simply beautiful too.

  5. lazylemons says on :

The tiara looks beautiful! Imo, not only is it the best part of Zara's wedding outfit, but the part that suits her the best. Otherwise, she looks like a bit of a cream puff in that dress and veil. So much volume.

  6. Tara says on :

I love this tiara! It really suits her, and the dress fits her personality. I also love the earrings!

  7. Patricia says on :

I'm so happy Zara wore the Meander (a lovely nod to the Duke of Edinburgh) and I like the positioning of it and the veil attached to her chignon. This style showcases the tiara so well. I would have liked a bit more hair volume on the top since you can see the base sitting on her head. Those diamond earrings are to die for, too! I wonder if they were a loan from her mother.

And it's doubtful that Zara will have need of this tiara again since she doesn't attend tiara events. Her focus is on her equestrian profession and other commercial aspects, not state banquets that she never attends since she doesn't have a title.

The tiara, veil and hair are just superb, really memorable and so suited to the bride. I hope future brides with tiaras will remember how effective it is to set the veil just below the tiara, rather than swamping it with tulle. I imagine the fabric of the dress was the ultimate in silk sating luxury, but that doesn't come across very well in photographs. I bet it was gorgeous in person.

I love this tiara as it looks modern and not too bling - which suits her and the occasion perfectly. Agree with lazylemons that this is the best part of her rigout - the dress is just dull, dull, dull - I had hoped for something a little quirky from Zara but thought from the choice of designer that it might disappoint from my pov. Still they both look blissfully happy. :o )

According to the DM (so we know it's true) the dress was off the peg from the designer's salon collection. If that is true, it might explain the slightly off proportions-there is only so much an alterations department can do, unlike a bespoke couture dress constructed for the body that will wear it, like Catherine's. But it is young and fresh and is a good foil for the tiara and her lovely smile. I like it better than the dress she wore Friday night.

I thought the tiara fit Zara quite nicely...I did think that there was too much veil going on though...congrats to the couple!!!

  12. PJ25 says on :

Hate the veil, LAAAAVE the tiara! So much history, so beautiful, so Zara. She makes a lovely bride.

  13. Jake says on :

I love the simplicity and art deco styling of this tiara. My only complaint is that it's not a full circlet. But Zara was ever the happy bride today and wish her and Mike all the best!

  14. Melissa says on :

Oh dear. I've missed hattery for the last week and I'm so excited to be amoung my "peeps" again, but I'm afraid I must disagree. Yes, I love the tiara - great choice - and yes I love the placement of the veil. BUT from the front the placment of the tiara just looks off. I heard she didn't use a professional hair dresser - maybe that's the issue.

  15. maggie says on :

I love this tiara, it looks great on her. I wasn't keen on the veil when she arrived, but once it was back off her face it looks great. She look absolutely blissfully happy, and Mike looked great - his splendid nose is almost as magnificent as the Meander!

  16. LauraS says on :

Zara looked lovely and happy, just as she should. On another board the earrings were identified as the same that The Princess Royal wore for a famous Vogue photo shoot in 1973.

  17. sandra says on :

    This from the Daily Telegraph:

Miss Phillips had chosen an off-the-peg ivory silk faille and silk duchesse satin gown by Stewart Parvin, a couturier to both the Queen and the Princess Royal.
The dress featured a chevron-pleated bodice, a dropped waist, and a "cathedral-length" train, and was designed to create a "bell-shaped" silhouette.
Parvin studied fashion at the Edinburgh College of Art and is an impeccable tailor.
"He's been a bit of an unsung hero in British fashion until now," says Paula Reed, the style director of Grazia, "He can dress any body shape, and he's brilliant at sculpting fabric, so he's been able to come up with a design for Zara that works with her natural athleticism, while also having a fairy tale femininity."
Parvin also dressed the Maid of Honour, Dolly Maude, in a dove grey knee-length duchess satin dress, which did not draw attention to itself with quite the same vigour as Pippa Middleton's bridesmaid gown at Westminster Abbey.
Her pared-down, natural make-up was from Bobbi Brown, while her hair was worn in a swept-up chignon, styled by Evangelos Tsaipkinis, of the Mayfair salon Michael John.

So there we have it. Parvin also designed the Queen's outfit for the wedding.

  18. nancy says on :

This article has contradictory elements. In the first sentence, it says the dress is off-the-peg.

Then it states specifically that the designer "came up with a design for Zara...." That sounds like couture to me, meaning designed and made for a specific client.
    Which is right?

  19. Lise says on :

Dress is from Parvin's "White Room". It was off the peg and perhaps adjustments were made to bust and waist. I liked it from afar but the close-ups showed what looked like it was machine hemmed at the bottom as the hem met the skirt; if so-that's a no-no, especially since it was supposedly a high-end gown. Besides that, she looked so happy. May they be blessed with a long, healthy life together.

  20. Ky Person says on :

The tiara does look a bit off balance, but not too bad. I normally don't care for diamonds on blonde hair but this tiara was placed so well that the diamonds really shone. I think the dress didn't really flatter Zara bosom and shoulders - a neckline like the one Charlene had would have been better, but never mind. Zara isn't a fashionista.

  21. Patricia says on :

My main quibble about the gown is that the hemline really throws it off. It's a different fabric and the seam is so obvious and unfinished; not what you'd expect from a top couturier. I'd have preferred to see a scalloped edge rather than that offset hem. But the tiara is so clean and geometric in shape that it complements the similar lines of the gown, and it's truly outstanding. While Zara may not have the opportunity to wear the Meander again, I hope her mother does eventually leave it to her.

  22. Sir Tom says on :

Now, at the risk of being negative to a bride on her wedding day, I'm not at all keen on the frock. The offset hem is awkward and I don't think a full skirt was perhaps the best idea on Zara.

HOWEVER, I'm willing to forgive all for this tiara. I bloody love it. The clean lines work so well on her and really lifts her face. The fringe or the festoon would have sat awkwardly on her, I think. Beautiful.

  23. sandra says on :

Dislike the hem too, now that I've had a good look. Seems as though it's a "tack on" if you'll pardon the pun.

Nice pix here of 3 generations wearing the same tiara:

  24. sandra says on :

BTW Ella, I see that Zara is retaining her own name (re your overline to this page). What a gal!

  25. sandra says on :

Good pix here of Autumn, the bridesmaids and page boy and of Mr and Mrs Tindall:

  26. Ella says on :

@sandra: Yep, she is keeping her name - I included that in the post! :)

  27. sandra says on :

@ella: Was wondering what the protocol is in a case like this. Would she ever be referred to as Mrs Michael Tindall if she has publicly announced she is retaining her "maiden" name? Does she officially stay Ms/Mrs Zara Phillips?

  28. Ella says on :

I think we're going to have to wait and see what BP says/does regarding her name in documents. I'm not sure there's been a case of a Windsor keeping her name after marriage until now.

  29. Mandy says on :

I'm in team love the tiara do not like the gown. I was disappointed as her style sense is generally pretty great but this just didn't look right from the waist down.

  30. Renee says on :

I thought Zara did very well for a tomboy wearing a wedding gown and tiara...she's probably much more comfortable in her riding gear.
The best photo of the wedding had to be the one of the best man showing up with a black eye and stitches in his face...couldn't half tell he's a rugby player! :P

  31. JamesB says on :

THe tiara is lovely, but he hair looked a bit unpolished - she needed her roots touching up or something, looked like her highlights were growing out. And the frock - hmm... not a lover. The hem was downright odd, and the waist made her look chunky. I hoped for so much more but thuis looked like it could have been bought in any bridal shop on the high street. Still - she looked happy, and kind of radiant in that way brides do...

  32. William says on :

She looks like Toni Collette in "Muriel's Wedding."
