Prinsjesdag 2011: HM The Queen of The Netherlands

Ahh, the rare silver-plated Cake Hat, spotted in the wilds of parliament.  No flash photography, please, we don't want to startle it.

Actually, I'm starting to wonder if this is just what the Dutch crown looks like...

(Also, thanks to lovely reader Pikkewyn, enjoy this awesome slideshow of Cake's mad parliament hattery over the years...)

The slide show is fantastic. I watched it several times. Over the years the hat has gotten wider, bigger. And this Queen hasn't changed her hair style in decades. But I must say she is a beautiful woman who has aged very well.

I think Beatrix looks radiant in silver. But she would've looked more radiant had both Máxima and Laurentien had also not worn silver/grey.

  3. Patricia says on :

That is one formidable hat. I like the fabric but am so not enamored of this design, as well as those fluffy feathers sprouting on her gown. But silver is a lovely color on her.

  4. Ontarian says on :

The hat, complete with handle, makes this look like a Queen Beatrix toby jug. The dress looks like something out of the Blanche Devereaux collection.

Ahem, why isn't she wearing a jewelled crown/tiara on her head? Surely this is taking Dutch informality a tad far?

I mean, she's sitting on a throne, right? The hat in these circs just looks a bit weird.

  6. Arlene says on :

Goodness, gracious. That slide show was hilarious. Laughed at the really big, square shoulders and the many hats.

  7. Ky Person says on :

I like this dress and I'd like it better without the feathers. As for the hat - the Bee has her cake hats and that's that. She's never going to change.

  8. SalannB says on :

Oh my...the worst of fashion through the years. I chuckled at the monster shoulder pads...

She really is a pretty woman. I wish someone would help dress her. And a milliner worth his/her salt would speak up!

  9. JamesB says on :

She really is veering into pantomime dame territory now isn't she. She's become a parody of herselves. I love that slideshow- you can see the hats get bigger and more cakey, and the shoulders get bigger bit by bit by bit... Fair play to 'ole Bea, she's happy to try out a look isn't she!

  10. Lise says on :

I also though "what the ..." when I saw her with a hat while sitting on her throne. This calls only for a sparkler of some sort..geez..

  11. Sir Tom says on :

I'm with James - she's become Widow Twankey. That said,I do like the silver. And the slideshow is hi-ruddy-larious! Especially the one at 22 seconds in (1988, I think).

  12. nancy says on :

The gown is Ok though not the queen's most flattering color. Why couldn't she have worn some kind of feathery fascinator a la the queen at Edward's wedding in 1999 or Camilla at her own wedding. They looked fine with formal wear in the daytime. The hat belongs with a suit or a day dress.

  13. ann2shoes says on :

She's surely stopping off at a Bring & Buy cake stall on her way home.........

  14. Felicitas says on :

This slide-show is unbelievably funny - great job - thanks so much. Looks like she has found her preferred (cake)hat style and is sticking to it for year and year and year.....

  15. Patricia says on :

I just had to come back here to say that it's so incongruous seeing a queen on her throne wearing a cake pan rather than a crown.
