Danish Ruby Jubilee - Gala Banquet: HM The Queen of Norway

Sonja wore perhaps my second-least favorite of the Norwegian tiaras tonight -- I know others are fond of this one -- Empress Joséphine's Emerald Tiara -- but to me, this picture shows especially well how (pardon me) ridiculous the settings of the gems are in this piece.  The stones are huge and impressive, true, but it's just not elegant.  I don't know.  Those of you who love it -- tell us why!

We really are seeing the big guns from the Nordic Queens tonight. This tiara would be so much better if that central emerald was set on its corner like the others. The dress looks very elegant too.

Gasp. Nooooo. I utterly love this. Tiara stones are normally rounded, but these square cut stones are so unusual, and it really has a modern air to it, whilst being utterly historical. I totally love this tiara, one of my utter faves, and the way Sonia does her hair with it is perfection.

I agree with Josephine-but that is the only thing I would change. Just tilt it over a little bit-like 45 degrees. Otherwise this is another classic-and the emeralds are a gorgeous teal. I love the balance of the square cut stones perched on the swirls and the rims of diamonds.

I don't hate this tiara, but I do happen to think that the smaller stones underneath the bigger stones kind of look like an owl's eyes. However, I think the tiara would be made 10x better if the middle stone at the top was turned to be a diamond shape like the other larger stones :)

I agree with everyone else. The only thing that would make this tiara a "10", would be to have the center emerald "en point". Otherwise, it's big and impressive and I love it.

The only disparaging thing I can say abou this is that Sonja wore a very light color. That, to me, kind of upstages Margarethe, which should NOT be done, in my opinion. But then again, Mette-Marit wore white/cream/ecru, also.

I'm with @JamesB and say that I adore this tiara. I may be biased because I love emeralds, but Sonja pulls this one off like no other royal in Europe can (in my opinion), especially with her perfect tiara hair. I only wish she had chosen a different dress to better compliment the jewels; the white just seems to wash things out for some reason.

I am in the love camp. First, the emeralds are gorgeous and complement Sonja very much. Second, the tiara is geometrically quirky which gives it a modern and classic look at the same time. Its like no other tiara and I'm so glad it gets quite a regular outing.

I love this tiara. I can't explain why I adore it, but perhaps it's because the 'bits' are so well defined, despite the variety of shapes, and the emeralds are really out there.

The tiara has an art-deco look to it and is almost architectural in its shape. I love how the emeralds are set off individually and are showcased in their diamond settings; they really stand out. I also think that the center emerald should have been tilted at an angle as well; it's just too square and broad. Next to Silvia, Sonja has the best tiara hair and is able to carry this tiara to perfection. Also, the size of that teardrop emerald earring is just amazing in its huge diamond mount. Luscious jewels!

I agree with most posters regarding the square emerald at the apex. But I also don't like that she wears these emeralds with reds and pinks. As ER II said, "red and green should never be seen".
