There's a new princess at this year's Imperial New Year Gala -- as she turned twenty this year, Princess Mako gets to join in the festivities, wearing the new diamond tiara she debuted recently. Her mother, Princess Kiko, is to her right, wearing her wedding tiara, and to Mako's left is Princess Hanako, wearing her usual fringe tiara.
I'm all for consistency, but man, why don't these princesses ever get to wear new tiaras/colorful dresses like the ladies beside them?

That is one line of imperial glitter! And, Ella, only the higher ranked imperial ladies wear white or ivory gowns, while those lower in status wear the colors. I have to say that I do prefer those gorgeously hued gowns, even though the ladies are considered below the salt.
It's interesting that Queen Elizabeth has also embraced the White/Ivory palette for the most formal of her state gowns. (See discussion of QE2 in most recent british state dinner post.)
Thank heavens the brits don't require white for all the senior royals...one can't even fathom a line-up of HM, The Princess Royal, along with the Duchess' Cornwall and Cambridge, Countess of Wessex, and maybe even the yorkie Princesses...all arrayed in white.
Would be like a very unsettling debutante ball hosted by Miss Havisham.
That said, diamonds really do POP when worn with a white ensemble.
