Sandringham Diamond Jubilee Wood: HM The Queen and HRH The Princess Royal

No, no, this isn't a photo of two Russian grannies hanging out in Siberia in January -- it's the Queen and Princess Anne, braving the freezing temps in England to kick off this year's Diamond Jubilee festivities by doing one of my favorite royal activities:

A royal tree planting!  Hooray!

The queen's jubilee year formally begins on Monday, the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne.  We'll be celebrating with the royals all year here at MH, too -- I've got a series of Jubilee Hattery Flashbacks queued up, and we'll be playing along as the royals go hither and thither to various events across the Commonwealth.  Get excited, hatters! :)

It really must have been cold on this day. Even Anne wrapped her head up in some sort of scarf. At least the colors in the one she wore do go well with her coat. I like the lighter color scarf that Her Mag wore. It's such an old tradition to wear a scarf out in the elements, but, hey, it's her thing and she rocks them!

I like how Anne wrapped her head and throat in the same scarf and tucked it into the collar; a little touch of flair. Good to see a hood on HM's coat in case she needed to pull it over that light, springlike scarf.

Can't wait for your Jubilee coverage and flashbacks, Ella!

In a couple of other photos of the Princess Royal from this event, it appears abundantly clear that she must have worn a pair of earmuffs under the head wrap -- and it's band probably whats also giving her a little extra umph with the whole Elvis pompador effect at the forehead.
    Bless her heart.

Just do not get the scarf thing. It looks exactly like Russian (or I guess English) grannies.

The Queen is doing her best Miss Piggie face in the first picture...

I'm awfully glad, Mr. Fitzroy, that you've provided some insight there - I was staring at the picture trying to imagine what texture HRH's hair must be, that it could maintain those lofty heights under what looks to be substantial scarf-pressure.

And James - I would hate to see either of these ladies angry. Formidable...

Ah, Mr. Fitzroy, and here I thought Anne was trying to emulate her mother's extra-bouffant hairstyle!

That green coat looks so cozy. And the boooots!

Bet they had a hot toddy when they got back inside.

Jubilee Hattery Flashbacks. Squee! I do the happy dance I am so giddy with excitement I think I've forgotten about the scarves. I like them.

Geez, I didn't even notice the headgear...I was focused on Her Majesty's boots! I *LOVE* those! English Riding Boots rock! So shiny! Her skirt needs to be a few inches longer, though, to really do those boots justice.
