Funeral of Countess Ruth of Rosenborg: HM The Queen of Denmark

Posted on August 6th, 2010 by Ella  |  14 Comments »

A sad hattery occasion — Countess Ruth of Rosenborg, the wife of the late Prince Flemming of Denmark (later Count Flemming of Rosenborg), died in late July, and her royal in-laws gathered today in Klampenborg Skovhovedon, Denmark, for her funeral.  Countess Ruth was 85.  Blogger Dag T. Hoelseth, a royal historian, has a nice obit on her here.

One of the royals closest to ruth was Queen Margrethe, who has repeated here the hat and ensemble she wore recently to the funeral of another friend, Countess Irene Wedell.  Still like the hat — the belt needs a rethinking, but as far as repeating of funeral hats goes, it’s not one of my pet peeves.  Hopefully no one ever has to stock up on funeral hats!

1300th Anniversary of Ribe: HM The Queen of Denmark

Margrethe wore her prairie bonnet golf visor from the Vietnam state visit today to — star in a new film version of Robin Hood?

No, just kidding — Daisy and Henrik are out visiting a Danish town celebrating its 1300th anniversary today.  (1300th — that’s just incomprehensible to an American like me!  My ancestors were probably serfs farming in Europe back then!)

The hat is just as ridiculous as it was the last time, but it was far from the most ridiculous thing on this visit.  Case in point:

LOL!  Defend that castle, Henri!

Visit to Tønder: HM The Queen of Denmark

Oh, Daisy, not another baldy hat!

Boo — and I really thought we were getting somewhere when it came to hat shapes!  This one is just too big — it looks like someone came over and tapped the top of the hat, and it sank down over HM’s eyes.  (I was sure we’d seen this one on the blog before, but it appears to be a new — to the blog, anyway — baldy hat.)

At least the Great Dane and the Big H are having a swell time, as per usual, though!  Even a sub-par hat can’t keep these two down…

Countess Irene Wedell Funeral: HM The Queen of Denmark

Posted on July 16th, 2010 by Ella  |  3 Comments »

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik attended the funeral of Daisy’s friend — and fellow opera enthusiast — Countess Irene Wedell today.  Marg’s actually wearing a different (or reworked) version of a hat she wore during last year’s state visit to Vietnam.  I like it better with the black brim, but the antennae still aren’t doing it for me.

The sock cap and the sweater make Henrik and Daisy look like homeless people, both of them — but homeless people in love!

Hattery Events: The Wedding of HRH The Crown Princess of Sweden (2010)

HRH The Crown Princess of Sweden and Mr. Daniel Westling
June 19, 2010

Well, kids, yesterday we partied hardy in the wedding live posts, and today we get to have a tiara fiesta!  I’ve compiled all of the tiara entries for the royal guests at Crown Princess Victoria’s wedding to Daniel Westling (now Prince Daniel) in this entry.

The wedding, of course, took place in Stockholm yesterday.  The couple has been together since 2002, when Daniel became Victoria’s personal trainer.  Love blossomed, and on their wedding day, Daniel became royal.  During their balcony appearance, Victoria thanked the people of Sweden for giving her a prince.

And now, we’ll all just have to wait to see how long it takes before the pitter-patter of little royal feet are heard in Haga Palace! ;)

The Crown Princess of Sweden’s Wedding: HM The Queen of Denmark

The more I see Margrethe, the more she becomes one of my favorite royals.  This lady does what she wants and has fun doing it!  Wear a bright green dress and a ridiculously huge pearl parure to a royal wedding?  Done and done, and with the Pearl Poiré Tiara to boot!

(Also: how much did you love Daisy and Henrik high-tailing it to the dance floor during the waltzing section of the evening?  If you rewatch the video at SVT, they’re both just chomping at the bit to get out there and bust a move!) ;)

Here’s the full-length shot of Marge’s green dress — the same one she wore to her own birthday gala

Hattery Flashback: The Wedding of HRH The Prince of Asturias (2004)

HRH The Prince of Asturias and Miss Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano
May 22, 2004

Only a week after Crown Prince Frederik married Mary Donaldson in Denmark, Prince Felipe of Spain tied the knot with journalist Letizia Ortiz in Madrid.  Theirs was the first wedding of a member of the Spanish royal family to take place in Madrid since the wedding of King Alfonso XIII and Princess Ena of Battenberg in 1906.  That wedding was marred by an assassination attempt on the royal couple and the tragic deaths of several bystanders — this one, thankfully, went more smoothly, although it was a cloudy, rainy day in the Spanish capital.

There were a few controversies, however, about Felipe’s choice of bride.  Letizia, a journalist who covered the September 11th attacks in New York and the Iraq War, will be the first commoner to be queen of Spain.  She also had previously been briefly married and divorced.  However, because her first wedding was a civil rather than religious one, the Catholic Church did not recognize it, and she was free to marry Felipe.

Felipe and Letizia have become quite a working team since their wedding, frequently appearing together on royal engagements.  They have also had two daughters, Infanta Leonor (born in 2005) and Infanta Sofia (born in 2007).  Leonor is expected to become queen of Spain in her own right one day — that is, if her parents don’t provide her with a baby brother!

Viborg Cathedral: HM The Queen of Denmark

Oh, dear — we’re back to the bald hats again.  On a woman wearing her hair down, this one wouldn’t be so bad, but with an updo, it’s just not great.  I’m also not a fan of the fire-engine red with the dark suit — that looks a little dated to me.

Still love you though, Marg.  Can’t think of many other royal women who would wear a scarf like a necktie!

Summer Yacht Tour – Samsø: HM The Queen of Denmark

Oh, Marg — the dear always takes a good thing and then runs a bit too far with it, doesn’t she?  She’s still working the retro cloche silhouette — a good thing — but now she’s added a patterned brim and bow — in my eyes, not such a good thing.  Matching can be nice, but simply coordinating can be even nicer!
