I really like the hat that Lady Helen wore for this year’s balcony appearance, and I almost love it, except for one thing: she appears to have raided my grandmother’s collection of dried flowers and seashells from the Gulf coast of Florida to fancy this thing up! Too much frou, not enough chic.
ETA: The good people at Ralph Lauren e-mailed me to pass on the info that the dress and jacket Lady Helen is wearing here are from their line. The more you know!

Let the hattery madness begin!
We’ll start off the most sacred hattering week of the year with a look at Lady Helen Taylor’s chapeau from the balcony apperance during this year’s Trooping the Colour festivities. I still can’t quite decide about this hat. I think I like it: it’s slightly unusual, definitely different from what all of the other ladies were wearing, and chic — it coordinates well with her low ponytail and her brown coat.
But it also seems a little … fuddy-duddy. I don’t know. Really, I’m so happy to see the miscellaneous minor royals that I’d almost be glad if they showed up with hats made of duct tape and Christmas lights, so perhaps I’m just being too easy on her…
(Also, I do believe there’s perhaps another little hat-wearing Kent cousin hiding behind the little Chatto boys Lady Helen is herding — come out, come out, minor royals, wherever you are!)

The Kents are out in force today! This is Lady Helen Taylor, the daughter of The Duke and Duchess of Kent, and her husband, Timothy. Welcome to Mad Hattery, Lady Helen!
She and her cousin Sarah Chatto apparently had a conversation about what to wear to the memorial unveiling, and decided to play, as my third-grade best friend would have put it, “matchmates” for the day. But hey, if you’re going to show up in the same hat as another member of the royal fam, at least Lady Helen chose an excellent one. Classy, chic, perfect for the rare public appearance. Well done!
