What better way to kick off the New Year than with a Tiara Alert?
Tis the season for New Year’s Courts in Denmark, when the royal family celebrates with banquets, receptions, and most importantly, some major royal bling. Here’s Princess Marie, wearing the same Diamond Floral Tiara she wore on her wedding day in 2008. Here’s what the Danish royal website has to say about her wedding tiara:
The tiara belongs to Her Majesty The Queen. It was a gift from the Queen’s parents, King Frederik and Queen Ingrid. Originally, the tiara belonged to Princess Dagmar (1890-1961), the youngest daughter of Frederik VIII and Queen Louise. In 1922 she married Master of the Royal Hunt Jørgen Castenskiold.
I quite like it, but then, I’m a big fan of these floral-motif tiaras. I think they’re unique but still classic. What about the rest of you?

I love this tiara, and Mary wears it perfectly. I’m a little more interested in the elephant necklace and your title “The Order of the Elephant”. What is that? (I could google but it’s more fun to learn here!)
No problem, Scarebaby! The Order of the Elephant is the most senior order of Danish chivalry: here’s more about it on Wikipedia. Most of the royal queens we’ve discussed here on the blog are members. The necklace is actually the Collar of the Order of the Elephant, and only members get to wear it. Both Marie and Mary became knights of the order on their wedding days.
I’m not really a chivalry expert; any of our brilliant hatters know more about the order that we could learn?
Wow, that’s really interesting. I mean, elephants are found in India and Africa, not Denmark or Sweden! Must learn more…
It’s an elephant because an elephant was used as the symbol for the defenders of Christianity. Read more about it at: http://www.kongehuset.dk/publish.php?dogtag=k_en_his_ord.
@ Scarebabay: This is Princess Marie, not Crown Princess Mary. Very different woman, though somewhat similar in looks. Danish folks tend to be much fonder of CP Mary.
Perfect tiara – one of my favourite Danish royal tiaras
beautiful and a lovely new collar, perhaps a family’s one ?
Kiri Anne — EEK! I knew that, just typed wrong. So sorry for the mixup. Actually CP Mary is one of my fav royals, along with Letizia’s little girls and the Monegasque women.
Absolutely gorgeous.
