Drottningholm Palace: HRH The Crown Princess of Sweden

A new set of official photos of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling has been released ahead of their wedding this summer, and we’ve officially got a Tiara Alert!

When I posted about the photos over at Royal Romance, lovely reader Eliza suggested the tiara belonged over here — and I can’t disagree with that!  On close inspection, I believe that Victoria’s wearing the Baden Fringe Tiara, although it’s difficult to tell absolutely for certain with such a small picture.  I can’t wait until larger versions show up!

The Baden Fringe, which has become a sort of personal trademark for Victoria, was originally owned by another Victoria: Princess Viktoria of Baden, who married the future Gustav V of Sweden in 1881.   As queen consort, she was Queen Victoria of Sweden (just like our Victoria will be one day, albeit as a queen regnant) from 1907-1930.  Viktoria was, if I’m counting my generations correctly, the great-great-grandmother of Crown Princess Victoria.  Quite a nice family inheritance, hm?

Over at Royal Romance, we did a little guessing about what tiara Victoria will sport when she ties in the knot in June.  Many think it’s going to be Empress Josephine’s Cameo Tiara, the same tiara that Queen Silvia wore when she married King Carl Gustaf.  Here’s a photo of Queen Silvia on her wedding day — June 19, 1976, wearing the Cameo:

There have been some suggestions, though, that it might potentially be the Baden Fringe.  What do you think, Hatters?  Which sparkler should Victoria wear to her big fancy royal wedding?

Oh she should wear her mum’s! That would be so nice and special. Just perfect for a wedding.
Wish I had the problem of what tiara to wear at my wedding!

I vote for the Cameo Tiara, her mama’s tiara !

I was looking at pictures of some Swedish tiaras (unfortunately I don’t have encyclopedic knowledge of tiaras like some :-) ). I actually really don’t like the Cameo tiara. The heads on the top of it just aren’t that nice.

A tiara I do like is the Carl Gustav Diamond Tiara. Whether or not Victoria even wears that tiara, I have no clue! But I do love it. I also like the Baden Fringe tiara, though.

I love the cameo and hope she wears it. It has real history, her Mum wore it on her big day and it’s suitably grand and tall for a bride…

Just an FYI: I added a photo of Silvia wearing the Cameo on her wedding day to the post, in case some of you haven’t seen it. :)

Boy, does Victoria ever look like her mother when her mother was younger.

See, I think the cameo tiara is a wee bit of a monstrosity. It literally looks like a few old bits of jewelery have been thrown together (maybe the jeweler was drunk?!) and the tiara was the result. Normally, I love it when these things are huge diadems, but I feel the height on the cameo is really odd, and a bit matronly. It has suited Queen Silvia slightly better in later years than it did back in the day.
The Baden Fringe is a gorgeous piece, and instantly says bridal to me. Or indeed the Carl Gustav Diamond tiara is equally as fabulous and would look great on Victoria.

LOL Sir Tom!! Agree – although maybe she put other pictures on it? Exes? “Hard luck boys!!”

  9. JamesB says on :

Hmm… I hear you SirTom, the cameo should be so wrong yet still I like it. Perhaps I like it because the jeweller was hammered. That’s my kind of jeweller! Is the Carl Gustaf Vic’s 18th bday one? Bit of a trinket for the big day no?

  10. Ella says on :

Nope, they’re two different ones. Here’s Victoria’s birthday tiara — far too dinky for a royal wedding, I agree — and here’s Madeleine wearing the Carl XVI Gustaf Fringe (or the Modern Fringe). I don’t know if Victoria’s ever worn the CG Fringe, to be honest. Usually we see it on Madeleine.

  11. JamesB says on :

Oh that one… That would do too but I think the bigger ones are needed. Anyone up for a group outing to Stockholm in June?!

  12. Elaine says on :

As Victoria will one day be Queen, I go for the Cameo tiara, after all they are marrying on the King and Queen’s wedding anniversary (19th June). As for Madeleine, I think she will wear the lovely Connaught tiara.

  13. Margaret says on :

Esthetically I prefer the Fringe tiara as i think it would work better with a veil…but from a sentimental POV the Cameo one would be nice.

Lordy – I’m getting old. I remember devouring coverage of Queen Silvia’s wedding all those years ago.
