Oh, the life of a working royal … it must be so weird sometimes to have your job consist of dressing up in a fancy hat, going to a fishing museum, and looking at a tiny tiny little Gulliver-style town. V. interesting…
The hat itself is one that I’ve liked and still like, but I think it might be a little much for the fishing museum. It looked right at home at Westminster Abbey, but perhaps the color, shape, and flower are a bit too fancy for this particular engagement?
Agreed – HM’s hat is a bit much for the fishing museum. I did notice, however, that little Lilibet looks quite a bit like Granny, Queen Mary, in the face. Speaking of Queen Mary, we haven’t seen a jaunty toque or turbanesque hat from HM in a numer of years, have we?
I do love this hat, but you’re right – it’s a big do hat rather than a trot round the trout museum.
I still love this ensemble. It may be a bit much for a fish museum, but then again, she IS the Queen.
Michael R, I’ve always thought she looks a lot like Queen Mary. We did see something rather Queen Mary-esque when HM visited Slovakia and Slovenia some time ago. It was a gorgeous toque hat which she wore with a gorgeous fur trimmed coat. Here’s the link: http://madhattery.royalroundup.com/?p=223
And I believe it was trotted out last Christmas as well. Quite the ice queen. I love that look.
Last Christmas repeat of the Queen Mary look. Fabulous.

Sir Tom, thank you for correcting my mistake – you must forgive me: there is very little coverage of HM in the US…
I do LOVE the toque and fur – very Queen Mary (and HM has a large portion of her jewels as well)! I am so glad I found this lovely blog to keep me up-to-date!
You’re so right, Michael — we do get very, very little royal coverage in the States. You really have to seek it out to find it! Welcome to the craziness of the blog — hope you stick around and chat with us some more!
No problem, Michael. Welcome aboard.
I quite like this – it’s got a bit of 70s pimp thing going on. Getting down with the Norfolk ho’s…
Oh my God Maggie – I nearly choked on me tea then – do you think this is what she wears round the back of BP trying to make some money out of Anne and Camilla ‘look at these little beauties…’.
Hahahahaha.
A knocking shop round the back of the Palace… interesting. ‘I’ve got a pair of nice young fillies for you here. Say hello Anne and Camilla’. ‘Hello, Sailor’.
Oh dear god.
Oh, you naughty readers. I feel like Stephen Fry on QI, LOL!
I think this ensemble is fine for this occasion, actually.
I have to say, I love this colour on her. If she just wore purple and blue (the same blue as her coat at the train station), I’d be fine!
I think the hat was perfect for visiting this charming little FISHERFOLK Museum. Have you ever been? Maybe you should pop along and find out what it meant to the proud Northenders to have the Queen visit them, looking elegant and proper. How would you have her dress to a so called ‘trout’ museum hmmmm waders and a sou’wester?
I would like to point out that True’s Yard tells the story of the North End of the town, most of which was destroyed in the 1930s slum clearances. It contains cottages, a fishing boat, and the last remaining smokehouse, and to throw in some flavour some real FISH. ooooooo. It isn’t just a trout Museum. The Queen thought it was worth a look, if she wasn’t interested she would have declined the invitation.
A very good hat, a very good colour, my favourite for this winter
Love her in purple! Always a great choice. Thanks for all the new news!
With all due respect, somepeoplearestupid — charming name, by the way — I think if you re-read what I wrote, I didn’t at all suggest that HM should not have gone to the museum or that the museum was not worthwhile. What I did suggest is that HM wore a hat that was overly ornate for an engagement like this. I would have said the same if she were making a visit to a school or a factory. This is a Westminster Abbey hat, not an afternoon engagement hat.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: this is a silly blog, with silly writing, and (if we’re all very lucky) very silly hats. Trust me, I don’t take myself terribly seriously. You’d probably do best to do the same!
Somepeoplearestupid. Erm, yes, aren’t they?! Anyways chill out – nobody is having a go at the museum, or the area. Just a bit of light hearted banter about a silly subject that everyone else seems to be enering into the spirit of… There, that’s me back in me box…
Seems like a good opportunity to say thank you once more to Ella for providing us oddballs with a place to witter on about such a frivolous subject!
Hi-ho-silver!
I must add, tho’, love the purp!
Indeed, let’s all chill – this is a fun blog – love to read (and see) about all those outrageous hats and tiaras. Keep up the good work, Ella!
