Queen Anne-Marie Center: HRH The Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleberg and HM Queen Anne-Marie of Greece

Posted on September 1st, 2010 by Ella  |  20 Comments »

It’s a sister act in Denmark today!  Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne-Marie teamed up to reopen the Queen Anne-Marie Center for the Elderly, a nursing facility in Copenhagen.  I love seeing them together!

So: hats!  I love the shape of Anne-Marie’s topper, but I don’t understand the black-and-white hat band (it’s almost zebra print, really) with the plaid jacket.  Our dear Ben’s got on a hat very similar to a fabulous one that CP Mary wore on last year’s state visit to Vietnam — but I don’t really love it as is.  Maybe in a deeper color (a plum/magenta like the suit?) and without the bow?

Good hats or not, it’s really nice to see Anne-Marie back in her birth country.  I’ve often wondered: why didn’t the Greeks relocate to Denmark after they were forced into exile?  Constantine is of Danish descent just like his wife.  Thoughts?

World War II Memorial: HIM The Empress of Japan

Aw, I’ve missed Empress Michiko and her tiny little hats!  Here she’s visiting a memorial to World War II soldiers with the Emperor.  The little gray hat is an excellent choice for a somber occasion — I actually genuinely like this one, it’s so chic in gray!

(Thanks to lovely reader Eliza for sending in the photo!)

Gråsten Slot: HRH Princess Isabella of Denmark

And now, a message from Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat:

What’s up, you guys!?!  It’s been way too long!  I mean, I’ve been TRYING to get Mom to put me in way more cute hats so we could hang out more often, but you know moms.  SIGH.

At least she let me wear another SUPER cute hair bow headband for one of my really important appearances in front of the paps.  Being a princess is a super demanding job, right?

I mean, when you’re, like, one of the only princesses in the whole COUNTRY, they always put you in the front row!  Like, duh!  I’m WAY cuter than Christian, so it totally makes sense.  If only I had been able to, like, squeeze in a manicure into my DEMANDING schedule of princess duties!

For serious, the nail situation was totally dire.  (Christian told me that Princess Amalia told him that she gets manicures ALL THE TIME, especially for that big wedding that I WAS NOT INVITED TO.  Yeah, whatever, I noticed.  See if you get to come to my awesome wedding, Swedish people.  Anyway, if having pretty painted nails is good enough for, like, an Orange princess, it’s totally good enough for me!)

But I, like, totally digress.

So, anyway, as you can see, Mary and I are getting along much better these days, even after her little buzz-kill freakout in April.  All was totally forgiven after she promised me BABY BROTHERS OR SISTERS!  Not one — TWO!  A puppy would have been, like, totally awesome, but now I get to have real life baby dolls!  YES!  So, yeah, mom and I are cool again.

For now, anyway, I guess — she probably just didn’t see me when Christian DARED me to lick the window and the stupid PAPARAZZI caught me.

SO UNCOOL, CHRISTIAN.  Can’t a PRINCESS even lick a window in private these days?  Totally HARSH, camera dudes.  (Also, P.S., please don’t tell my mom … at least not until after I get to dare the new babies to do it, too.  HOORAY!)

[Isabella would like me to thank lovely reader Eliza for sending me info about this event!] :)

Belgian National Day – Military Parade: HRH Princess Claire of Belgium

Posted on July 21st, 2010 by Ella  |  11 Comments »

Princess Claire obviously had the wrong event penciled in on her calendar today — rather than the national day military parade, she clearly thought she was scheduled to attend prom in 1954.

The hat on its own is actually quite lovely — I really like the pearly gray – but the entire ensemble makes me want to bust out a karaoke rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”  But now, there’s noooooowhere to hiiiiiide, since you pushed my love asiii-iiide!

(Also: hey, Astrid!  Hold on, girl — you’re up next.) ;)

Belgian National Day – Te Deum: HM The Queen of the Belgians

Yeah, Paola, I’m confused, too.  You’re wearing — a lopsided, lacy ring of Saturn?

Yep, definitely a lacy ring of Saturn made of plastic that she left in the car on the hottest day of the year and melted.  (Wow.  Is that the weirdest hattery description I’ve ever done or what?)

Royal Ascot 2010, Day 4: HRH Princess Haya of Jordan, Sheikha of Dubai

Another day at the races, another mumsy floral hat from Haya.  I’m so disappointed with her hattery this year — what happened to the glam lady we saw last year?  This one’s a little better because it’s black-and-white — the gray top is really interesting — but still.  Same shape, same flower placement, blah.

Do love the cuffs on the coat, though.  And the bright red fingernails!  Do you think she and Queen Marg share a manicurist?

Reading of the Banns: HRH The Crown Princess of Sweden

Posted on May 30th, 2010 by Ella  |  10 Comments »

Crown Princess Victoria and the future Prince Daniel look so happy lately, don’t they?  Here, after the lysning ceremony, they’re receiving a gift from the Swedish government: a 1,000 piece set of handmade Swedish glassware, designed for official entertaining. I’m sure you all received similar gifts for your wedding, right?

My only qualm here is that Victoria decided to accept the gift wearing a feathered pancake on the back of her head:

These flat, back-of-the-head fascinators are going to become a thing this summer, aren’t they?  Maybe they’ll grow on me.  But really — first Mette-Marit, now Victoria.  Maybe the crown princesses just all got together and bought them in a bulk deal, similar to the one the Daniel and his parents, Olle and Ewa, apparently got from Lenscrafters?

First they share a kidney, now glasses.  That’s love, people. :)

Royal Dutch Guide Dogs Fund: HM The Queen of The Netherlands

It’s not just a Beatrix Cake Hat, ladies and gents: it’s an iridescent Beatrix Cake Hat!  (And I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I sort of like it!)

More importantly, though, this visit to mark the 75th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Guide Dogs Fund has proved one of my pet (ha!) theories: that dogs love royals as much as royals love dogs:

Awwwww! :)

Norwich Cathedral: HM The Queen

Posted on May 4th, 2010 by Ella  |  11 Comments »

Okay, here’s something unusual: HM chose to wear the same hat to today’s dedication service at Norwich Cathedral that she wore barely more than a month ago at this year’s Royal Maundy service.  How often do we see Lilibet repeat a hat that quickly?  I hope Queen Margrethe isn’t rubbing off on her…

(Different brooch this time, though — a really gorgeous and unusual one, too!  Any info on that, jewelry experts?)

Amalienborg Museum: HM The Queen of Denmark

I really wish that Queen Margrethe had worn a crown like the one on the banner above her to this museum exhibition opening rather than this sad, fedora-like thing she’s got on.

Gray, check.  Sinking over her face so that she looks rather bald, check.  Half-hearted embellishment, check.  A big “ehhhh” from me all around, I fear, especially when posed next to Mary’s pretty scarlet chapeau.  Maybe Mary could lend her mother-in-law her personal stylist as a birthday gift?
