No, no, this isn't a photo of two Russian grannies hanging out in Siberia in January -- it's the Queen and Princess Anne, braving the freezing temps in England to kick off this year's Diamond Jubilee festivities by doing one of my favorite royal activities:

A royal tree planting!  Hooray!

The queen's jubilee year formally begins on Monday, the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne.  We'll be celebrating with the royals all year here at MH, too -- I've got a series of Jubilee Hattery Flashbacks queued up, and we'll be playing along as the royals go hither and thither to various events across the Commonwealth.  Get excited, hatters!

As per usual, Anne's either hiding from the photographers on the way to church, or they're ignoring her.  And it's too bad, because this hat really doesn't look too bad!  (It doesn't really match her coat, and it looks a bit springy, but heck, it's Princess Anne!  We'll take what we can get.)

Princess Anne was front and center at tonight's state banquet, and she didn't scrimp on the bling: this is, of course, the Festoon Diamond Tiara, probably more familiar to most royal watchers as the tiara that Autumn Phillips wore on her wedding day.  We haven't actually seen Anne in this one on the blog yet -- I like how parts of it just barely peek out over her hair!

First glance: elegant!

Second closer look: '80s?  Yep, I'd almost put money on it.

Either way, Anne's wearing this straw-and-tulle creation to an important event: the official ceremony giving the town of Wootton Bassett its "Royal" prefix.  If you've not been reading about the town's special efforts to honor Britain's war dead, have a look over here.

We've seen this particular repehat a ton of times, but this is the first time I've ever noticed that Anne seems to have hot-glued a scrunchie to the side of it...

And Princess Anne officially continues the trend of wearing random feathers in her hair at her children's weddings.  Clearly she made Sir Tim go and forage for these outside this morning.  God love ya, Annie!

Okay -- dipping my toe in tentatively to say that I love this, and I think it might be from this decade and not the '80s.

It's a little bit big, but fairly fabulous for an Anne hat, isn't it?  Maybe she should have saved this for her upcoming mother-of-the-bride gig?  (Oh, heck, who's kidding -- she'll probably repeat it then!  "New hat for my daughter's wedding?  Who are we talking about here!")
