State Visit to Qatar - Katara Opera House: HRH Princess Máxima of The Netherlands

It's a brand-new Tiara Alert for Max!  We saw her sister-in-law, Laurentien, sporting Queen Emma's Diamond Tiara at CP Vic's wedding in Sweden, but this is the first time Maxima has worn it.  So glad she went for the all-diamond setting rather than ruby version -- the tiara looks so much better pimple-free, LOL!

Also: it's Sheikha Mozah!

Awww -- I love when my favorite royal ladies are pals! :)

Posted on December 31st, 2010 by Ella  |  23 Comments »

All right, hatters, you know what time it is!  Drumroll, please!

That's right -- slap on your black-tie attire, pour yourself a glass o'champers, and settle in for the Mad Hattery Awards of 2010!  (No, seriously, hurry up -- King CG is clearly waiting on you!)

We've moved the festivities inland from last year's cruise-ship do, but that just means more room for all of us and the maddest hatters of the year!  So, without further adieu, let's get the party started!

And the winners are...

World Cup Announcement: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Sigh ... I have to admit that I was pretty bummed this morning when my home country, the good old USA, lost out on the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.  But when I saw who was there to help promote the Qatari bid, I totally understood why we lost out.  I mean, who can compete with Her Glamness herself?  Our American hattery simply cannot compare...

State Banquet: HM The Queen and HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

No tiara at the state banquet for Mozah -- I don't think she ever wears them, though some savvy poster may be able to prove me wrong on that one.  Love the scarlet outfit and matching headwrap, though -- very flattering.

We do have a sparkler from Lil out tonight, though -- and a new one to the blog at that!  This is the Vladimir Tiara, bought in the 1920s by Queen Mary from Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia (who had to sell off many of her valuables after the Russian Revolution).  Queen Mary later gifted it to her granddaughter, the current queen.

It's quite the show-stopper, with its circular motifs and drop pearls (it can also be worn with a set of the Cambridge emeralds in place of the pearls).  I have to say, though, it's not my favorite look on HM -- I really think this tiara would better suit the Duchess of Cornwall, to be honest.  What do the rest of you think?

(Also really not loving the necklace -- HM's really Queen-Mary-ing it up tonight, isn't she?)

State Visit from Qatar: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Sheikha Mozah is one seriously chic royal lady, isn't she?  Love the dove gray color choice for today's welcome ceremony.  And paired with the gray fur -- now, I'll admit, fur is not my thing, but it does make her look like a '40s movie goddess, doesn't it?

And the full-length view was outstanding as well:

Gorgeous!

Youth Leadership Development Foundation: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

One of the most regal hatters around, Sheikha Mozah of Qatar, was in Yemen today, touring the Youth Leadership Development Foundation.  She's dressed in traditional garb, with a full headscarf, but she just radiates "royal" no matter what she wears, doesn't she?  I mean, look at that posture!

Thanks to lovely reader Eliza G for sending in this photo!

Royal Botanic Gardens: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Okay, I think this gray outfit is my favorite so far of Sheikha Mozah's looks during her England trip -- there's something so old-school Givenchy about this, isn't there?  The turban-and-sunglasses combo just reek of '60s-era glam.

And she was courteous enough to laugh at Prince Charles's jokes, too, while the two of them were out planting trees at the Royal Botanic Gardens.  I'm guessing Camilla wasn't able to join them -- she broke her leg while walking in Scotland this week.  Hope you feel better soon, Your Royal Highness!

Memorandum of Partnership Signing: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Sheikha Mozah of Qatar is continuing her visit to England today, signing a memorandum of partnership between the Qatar Foundation (she's the chairperson) and the Royal Society.  Love the color of the turban here -- the monochromatic ensemble is so Jackie-O chic, isn't it?

Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing Reception: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Leave it to the Queen of England to provide the blog with both a new royal hatter and a new royal-hattering country!  The lady in question here is Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the second of the three wives of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The Sheikha has lived something of a Cinderella story -- she was a commoner in Qatar, attending university, when she fell in love with and married the country's crown prince (now the Emir).  She's quite the mover and shaker in her country, serving as chairperson of several foundations and even working with the United Nations -- all while also raising seven children.  Wow!  Go, girl! :)   She's at Windsor Castle today to help celebrate the cooperative publishing project of the Qatar Foundation and the British-based Bloomsbury Publishing company.

Mozah's headwear here, I believe, serves a religious purpose as well as an ornamental one -- I'm almost certain it's a form of hijab, the traditional head-covering worn by many Muslim women.  I'm not totally expert on the various forms of religious headwear, though, so feel free to inform me if I'm off base!  (I can always count on my super-smart readers to know the answer to tough questions.)  Regardless, I love the blue color that coordinates with the color of the Sheikha's skirt.  Lovely!
