A Daily Dose of Tiaras...

Posted on January 2nd, 2013 by Ella  |  Comments Off

Hi, all! I'm peeking out after a long blogging break for two reasons. One is just to say hello (hi!), and the other is to direct you to my new daily tiara blog, A Tiara a Day. For the whole of 2013, I'll be posting a tiara on the blog every weekday for your sparkly enjoyment! I'd love it if you'd check it out.

What you're probably all wondering is really this: what's going to happen to Mad Hattery? The answer is that I'm not sure yet. I don't want to give up on the blog yet, but I've been feeling the need for new and different projects. So for now, this blog is temporarily on hiatus,. You can catch me at the new blog, as well as on Twitter and over at my Tumblr blog, where I do occasionally fit in a bit of hat snark. (Let's face it, I really can't help myself.)

Thanks a million for all of your messages during my blog hiatus. Hope you enjoy the new project, and I'll see you all soon!

It's been far too long since we've had royal wedding hattery fun on the blog, hasn't it?  Good thing the Dutch royals were happy to oblige us today!

Danish Ruby Jubilee - Diplomatic Corps Dinner: HRH The Crown Princess of Denmark

Posted on February 1st, 2012 by Ella  |  6 Comments »

I had messages from several of you wondering if Mary's tiara at this event was new -- it's actually the second outing for the pearl setting of her Wedding Tiara.  (Here's the previous time it was worn with pearls; it's positioned much better on her head this time.)

I do like the way that the pearls are picking up on the golden color of her jacket this time around, and I'm really pleased that she's continuing to be inventive with her tiaras ... but I still don't like it.  I think they're pretty much going to have to dismantle this one to gain my approval.  (Because they really care about that, LOL!)

It's the Emerald Parure Tiara, part of the Danish crown jewels, for Daisy at the dinner -- love the way the emerald stones work with the teal dress.

No decent close-ups of Ben's tiara for tonight's dinner at Christiansborg, but it appears to be her Floral Birthday Tiara, a gift from her parents.  One of my favorites of the S-W-B tiaras!

Rounding out tonight's gala coverage with the woman of the hour in the Pearl Poiré Tiara, one of her favorites.  Really you can't go wrong with this one.

Also: have you all seen that Daisy is indeed getting a new jubilee tiara?  It's not rubies (sad!), but a new diadem made from a golden floral ornament given to her by the people of Greenland.  (You can see a photo here at RJWMB.)  Can't wait to see it!

It's the sapphire-and-diamond fortress from Sil tonight: the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure Tiara.  I know you all know what I think about this, but all that aside: really, shouldn't it have been the Edward VII Ruby Tiara?

Danish Ruby Jubilee - Gala Banquet: HM The Queen of Norway

Sonja wore perhaps my second-least favorite of the Norwegian tiaras tonight -- I know others are fond of this one -- Empress Joséphine's Emerald Tiara -- but to me, this picture shows especially well how (pardon me) ridiculous the settings of the gems are in this piece.  The stones are huge and impressive, true, but it's just not elegant.  I don't know.  Those of you who love it -- tell us why!

The Diamond Daisy Tiara for Queen Daisy's jubilee ... a nice tribute, but I can't help but wish we'd seen something else on M-M.  This tiara is an absolute workhorse, and it deserves a break!

Danish Ruby Jubilee - Gala Banquet: HRH Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark

We're back in familiar tiara territory with Theodora tonight: this is the Antique Corsage Tiara that she wears most often.  It's a lovely piece, really similar to the Floral Birthday Tiara worn by the SWB ladies.

What I'm actually more interested in here, though, is the order -- have we seen Theodora wear one before?  Is it a Greek one?  (Surely Constantine can't give a Greek order to a princess born after he was deposed, right?)  I just can't recall seeing her with one before, so please feel free to enlighten me. :)
