State Visit to the UAE - Meeting with the President: HRH Princess Máxima of The Netherlands

I could have sworn we'd chatted about this mess of a turban on the blog before, but I think it's actually sort of a cross between the turban from the Big Fat Cambridge Wedding, the straw hat Tornado, and some leftover Christmas tinsel.  And yet ... I sort of love it.  Especially from this angle:

What say you, dear readers?

Prince Albert's Wedding: HIM Empress Farah Pahlavi

I tend to be very anti-turban in general, but I don't know -- I think this sort of works on Farah.  Maybe you have to be a former empress to pull one off?  Thoughts?

State Visit to Germany - Herzogenrath-Kerkrade: HRH Princess Máxima of The Netherlands

Another go at the turban for Máx -- and in Barbie pink this time.

I think I might be more inclined to like this if it were in a neutral color -- as is, it's a lot of look and a lot of Pepto pink.  Would you check out the hair, though?  Gorgeous!

Official Visit to Ghana - Ekumpuanoa: HRH The Crown Princess of Norway

Lovely reader Eliza sent me info about this event (thank you to all of you have been sending me e-mails recently!) -- she calls Mette "one helluva good sport," and I couldn't agree more!  Rule #4169844 of Princessing: always be ready to wear unusual headgear with a smile.  Take note, Kate Middleton! :)

Historical Hattery: Diana, Princess of Wales

Posted on July 1st, 2010 by Ella  |  10 Comments »

One of our lovely readers e-mailed me a while back and requested that some of the mad hattery sported by the late Diana, Princess of Wales be featured on the site -- and what better day to do it than today, which would have been her 49th birthday?

Here's Lady Di back in 1989 on a visit to Dubai (back when she was still HRH The Princess of Wales), wearing one of the very maddest hats she ever sported.  Is it a turban?  is it a satellite dish?  No -- it's both!  And with feathered chopstick embellishments to boot!

And, in a move that would have raised groans among all of you back in '89, she repeated the wacky chapeau only a few weeks later at that year's Royal Ascot!

Sigh.  Now I'm imagining '80s-era Mad Hattery again, with Fergie's bow explosions and Di's crazy shapes and colors.  If only! :)

I don't know about all of you, but when I go to fancy architecture exhibits in Zurich, I tend to unwrap the towel turban I put on my head after getting out of the shower first...

Birthday Lunch at City Hall: HRH Princess Máxima

Posted on April 16th, 2010 by Ella  |  10 Comments »

Hey, everyone, look who finally made it to Copenhagen through the giant ash cloud!

It's Princess Máxima, who came with her husband, Willem-Alexander, and her mother-in-law, Queen Beatrix, on the royal train to be here for QMII's big birthday (hopefully we'll see Queen Bea at tonight's dinner).

I'm not sure about all this plaid, though -- do you think she had to pack quite quickly in all the melee?  The hat looks to be some sort of turban-like contraption in the same fabric as the coat.  I've seen worse, but I can't say I'm a big fan...

Update: Here's another angle on the plaid turban:

Royal Botanic Gardens: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Okay, I think this gray outfit is my favorite so far of Sheikha Mozah's looks during her England trip -- there's something so old-school Givenchy about this, isn't there?  The turban-and-sunglasses combo just reek of '60s-era glam.

And she was courteous enough to laugh at Prince Charles's jokes, too, while the two of them were out planting trees at the Royal Botanic Gardens.  I'm guessing Camilla wasn't able to join them -- she broke her leg while walking in Scotland this week.  Hope you feel better soon, Your Royal Highness!

Memorandum of Partnership Signing: HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned

Sheikha Mozah of Qatar is continuing her visit to England today, signing a memorandum of partnership between the Qatar Foundation (she's the chairperson) and the Royal Society.  Love the color of the turban here -- the monochromatic ensemble is so Jackie-O chic, isn't it?
